I sure like the looks, but wonder if it pinches open real easily like the U-2.

???

Yes I have, have it my hand right now.

Like all Fallkniven knives the FH9 is high quality with superb fit and finish. It is a nice solid, heavy (for it's size) knife that fits nicely in the hand.

This knife is not an EDC for me, but I keep it in the tool kit in my truck so I have used it a bit. I'm not sure I exactly follow what you mean by "pinches open" but if you are refering to pinching both sides of the blade with your fingers and pushing the blade open with one hand, I would have to say it does not open easily this way.

I don't have my U2 handy for comparison.

One interesting thing about the knife is unlike many Fallkniven's the FH9 is not convex ground, it is a flat grind with a beveled edge.

very cool. i'm gald to see your posts. :)

Thanks,

It is a very different knife than the PXL for the most part, however the one thing it shares in common is the sturdy build and solid heavy feel; for it's size.

thanks for the pics dag-nabit. that pxl looks realy nice. how do you find the 3g to sharpen. havent had the need to sharpen my u2 yet but hopefully the dc4 can do the trick.

I bought and returned a PXL. Too dang HEAVY. I mean... H-E-A-V-Y!!!

Some issues with bolster/liner fit also for such an advertised quality knife.

But I thought maybe the FH9 would fit the bill for weight, but if I'm gonna use two hands to open it, I want it EASY. The U-2 is ..... EASY!

Guess I'll pass on this bitchin lookin knife.

Just to clarify: are you looking for easy one hand opening or two hand opening. I interpreted your initial question to mean you wanted to be able to "pinch" open the knife with one hand. If you are using two hands opening is a cinch.

Two part answer.

1. I haven't needed to sharpen the FH9 yet, but I EDC a P/3G folder. I was getting frustrated trying to get a razor sharp edge back on the knife using a diamond/ceramic combo. In reality I was getting the knife plenty sharp for every day tasks, but not back to the factory edge.

The P/3G is convex ground, so I finally tried the mousepad/sandpaper method I had been reading about and my P/3G is back to razor sharp. (took about an hour to re-establish the convex, now I can freshen it up in 5 minutes or so)

The 3G steel takes extra time to sharpen, but isn't really any more difficult, just more time needed.

2. As for the FH9, with the flat, scandi grind with a bevel edge, the flat surface of the DC4 should work fine for sharpening. I will know more first time I try to sharpen it. It's possible I may find my technique just sucks.

With 3G, expect it to take a bit more time.

3. (OK it's a three part answer) The U2 is a convex grind with a bit of a bevel for the edge. You should be able to sharpen the flat bevel with the DC4, but if you find you are not satisfied with the results try the sandpaper/mousepad technique.

Kevin

Note: this is just my experience/observation, I have read a couple threads where members report excellent sharpening results on convex with stones or rods.

On the subject of sharpening the 3G, i've been carrying and using a TK3 for the last few weeks now, great EDC blade, the cutting/slicing performance and edge retention is top notch, fantastic little blade to use. I've found it a cinch to bring back to factory sharp (in fact i reckon it's even sharper than when i got it, it's more polished than the factory edge) with a DC4. A minute or two on the diamond side, same again on the ceramic and it's absolutely wicked sharp again. Not sure what this buisness with the mouse pad is all about ( a diamond stone would bring it back surely?) but i've found the 3G to be really easy to maintain with the DC4.

The mouse pad sharpening method is used to create/maintain a convex edge.

If you prefer a beveled edge then a diamond / ceramic combination will certainly work.

When I suggested I wasn't able to get my blades razor sharp with a diamond/ceramic combo, I was speaking to my poor sharpening skills, not the method.

Personally I just have better success with convexed edges and generally convex all my knives.

There are some who possess the skill to sharpen a convex edge with a stone as well.

There is lots of discussion about the pros and cons of different edge grinds, but for me it comes down to personal preference and what works best for me.

Ah, i see, i didn't read your post properly it seems, sorry about that, missed the model P convex buisness.

The Tk3 is a bevel edge, and it's a piece of cake to maintain on a DC4, but i've never had to bring it back from dull so i can't attest to that.

I liked the TK3 so much i ended getting the MOP version too, can't see me using that one though although i got it quite cheaply from knifesupply.com.

The FH9 looks nice, i like the blade and the low riding pocket clip. I think a tk4 with a pocket clip would make an ideal EDC.
