Has anyone here ever actually worn out a knife?

I'm not talking about abusing a knife till it breaks, I'm wondering about just having used it, like a knife, till it wears out...the blade is worn down from sharpening, or the action loosens up to a degree that is dangerous, etc...

Great question.:D Haven't done it yet, but it will be one of my New Year's resolutions for 2002.

I almost wore a SAK out. It was about 8 years old when I retired it to my bike bag. It wasn't loose, but wasn't snappy tight either.

When I was a teenager I had an inexpensive Barlow style pocket knife that I used and sharpened a lot. Eventually I developed almost a khukuri style inward curve to the edge and had to retire it. I also have a couple fixed blades from back then that are getting to have too much of an ice pick look.

I'm wearing out my fourth or fifth Victorinox... Just sharpened and oiled it and it's back in business! Those damn scissor-springs keep breaking though... And I keep losing the toothpick. :D

I have an old Western barlow that I carried for over ten years. I retired it when it closed on me one time too many :)

seen a lot of old folders from my grandfathers day with THIN blades... I mean 2/3 of the blade sharpened away.
Made a gents box cutter for my buddy out of Vascowear and he couldnt sharpen it for nothing....so he got a diamond hone....a year later half the width of the blade was gone.....it must be toast by now! :)

I put to rest a Case "peanut." Carried it for 15 years. The bolsters and scales survived. Like Tom said. . .blades were worn out from sharpening.

Man. . .loved that knife !

Yep, a Schrade stockman. It was'nt totally worn out, just sharpened to the point that the blade rested above the frame.:)

My dad has a Case Farmer knife, that is eligible for AARP. I keep it sharp for him, and recently noticed half has been sharpened away. He's had that little sucker for at least 15 years. Our running joke is to compare "it" to whatever new knife I buy. He'll hold the Farmer in one hand, the new culprit in the other all while pointing out the finer points of his Case and all of the dislikes of mine. It's only funny to him and I, I wouldn't expect anyone else to appreciate the joke!

I haven't done it myself, but I gave my brother-in-law a Buck lite about 10 years ago. While camping this fall I picked it up and noticed that it was now pretty much a good filet knife.

I told him it was time for me to get him a new knife and he thought I was crazy - there's still plenty of use left in it!

I also wore a Schrade Stockman to the point that the blade was no longer covered by the scales. I carried and used it nearly every day for about 15 years. It now rests in a place of honor in my vault.

My mini AFCK has been used long enough that the liner lock has worn out. The blade's also a bit smaller than it was before, and it's also missing a bit off the tip. It now has blade play in all directions when open, and I treat it as a slipjoint since the lockup feels kinda shady.

When I was doing most of the farm and ranch stuff a knife would last about 3 years. I have four retired ones on the kitchen wall, blades all but gone. There are also some factory packing house blades that don't have much cut left in them.

I wore my Boker King Kutter down (mostly by sharpening), using it 99% for whittling. It still takes a great edge but the blades have been honed back so much that they protrude above the scales, so it's not safe to carry. Wish I could find another. Maybe this Christmas... I won Ivan Campos fabulous Standard Tanto last year and I've been even better this year!:)

Yes. Original G2 Spyerco Endura, lock wore out so it would not lock properly, only happened with the first one.

Ditto with a first run AG Russell One-Hander, looks like the Crawford French Folders. Lokc bar wore out.

Interesting topic. I have an OLD buck knife that was my fathers when he was a young lad and he gave to me when i was 10 i still have it sitting in my knife safe and it still takes a razor edge, although theres not as much of the blade left than when it was new but hell the knife is close to 40 years old. on the other hand i wore out an emerson CQC7 in about 2 years but god did i abuse that knife i retired it out of pitty :(

If knives would wear out faster, it would be MUCH easier to convince our women folk that we NEED new knives as often as we buy them!
