Has anyone here ever been "busted" for the knife they were carrying?

I was wondering today, as I stepped out the door, if I should carry my Mini-Grip or my S30V Leek. I chose the Mini-Grip because it's not assisted open.

I then began to think "I wonder how many times any one of us has been stopped for whatever and actually gotten busted for the knife they had on them"?

Have any of you ever had a knife confiscated or been arrested or anything for the posession of a knife?

I never have, but then again I'm not out "asking" for trouble. :)

I'm just a regular Joe who carries a knife for the beautiful utility that a knife is.

Never been busted, but I have never been searched either. I read some good tips from other people. Basically though, just be respectful. Don't be a @sshole and get in their face yelling that you know your rights. And explain to officers that you carry your knife as an everyday tool. Never tell them you carry it for self-defense. If you do they will consider it a weapon and may possible bring on a whole new set of problems.

I think you hit on it right there. The people that get hooked up for a knife are thugs and other scumbags. Or people that ask for police scrutiny by being disrespectful and rude when getting a speeding ticket.

It's difficult to get busted for anything, period. You have to do something to attract attention to yourself. Common examples would be
  • Drunk and disorderly
  • Felonious speed
  • Drinking alcohol in its original container or smoking drugs while driving
  • Waving at the police
  • Dressing and acting like a gang member

So far no cop has ever asked me about them at all. I keep it clipped to my pocket, visible, but not obvious. The one time I've been asked if I had any weapons on me I didn't happen to bring my knife with me that day. Who knows how it would of gone.

There was a robbery that had occured and they believed them to be armed. I was in the neighborhood 5 minutes after it happened walking around in all black. First time I'd ever been held at gunpoint. While talking to the officers we both saw a group of four teenagers driving down the road, then suddenly speed away. Made things pretty obvious. One of them chased after, the other finished running my ID and that was that. Cops here are real nice and never give you hassle. Set a good example for other law enforcement types.

I used to think you had to really be up to no good or doing something pretty stupid to get busted for carrying an illegal blade, but a nephew of mine who's a great kid got popped during a traffic stop a few months ago. Don't know all the details, but I knew the Benchmade he carried was about half an inch over the limit where he lives.

Suddenly he seems to appreciate what I do, which is keeping any weapons in an unlocked briefcase where it's easy to get to ... if I get pulled over, I just hit the dials on the locks. For good measure, I have a luggage tag on it with the name, address and phone number of my attorney.

Went to jail for a double edged boot knife when I was 20 (39 now),
The officer was going to let me go until his superior showed up and rained on my let-go...
Lesson learned ? Yea , choose new friends. :)

What do you mean by "Waving at the police"? Just like waving your hand like saying "hi"?

I've done this when the local cops have driven by and I'm mowing my lawn or something. They always just wave back.

I don't get what you mean by that. :)

I wish Ohio had specific knife laws (Well really I wish it had more reasonable knife laws in the first place, but that's another story). Here it's any lethal weapon that is concealed can present problems, and knives fall under that category. So even a sub 2 inch folding keychain knife with no lock could be considered deadly, not that I see any cop giving me hassle for such a device. The longest folders I've purchased so far have blades just over 3 inches. I plan to keep any folder I EDC here in Ohio under 4 inches for sure. Most of em are around the 3 inch mark. I don't even know if they consider clipping knives on the inside of the belt illegal, or if carrying the knife like that in the car is a problem.

I already went to the police station once and asked them about this and that was about all they told me. That any concealed knife could technically present a problem if the cop felt like it, but anything unconcealed should be ok for the most part. I'm thinking about taking both my EDC folders in and asking them their thoughts on them and showing them clipped to my pockets and how they feel about that. I don't know if I should though.

Damn obscure knife laws.

You can carry in your car as long as it can be seen. I asked my local cops about this already. I keep a knife in my car for emergency if like my seatbelt needed cut or something. It's cliped to a piece of paracord that is wrapped around my drivers side sun visor. This way if I'm in a wreck the knife doesn't fly all over the car. If I have a knife clipped to my pocket and my shirt is covering it and I get pulled over I always make sure my shirt is moved around so the clip can be easily seen.

I live in Ohio too. The local laws are very specific but the state laws are not.

Back in 85 when I was 17, I got my custom Benchmade/Pacific Cutlery Balisong "confiscated" by Monterey, California police. Stag handles with a custom blade.

Was at a beach party with friends when a girl I liked needed to use the restroom. Offered to drive her to the nearby hotel. While we were gone a fight broke out. We get back and police are all over. I get searched, they find the Balisong. My options - go to jail & lose knife or "donate" it to the Gilroy weapons facility.

Miss that Balisong.

it was in '89 when i was 16 and a pal took us joyriding in his dad's car.he was unlicensed and we were speeding on dirt roads behind our 'burb when we pass a police car driving in the opposite direction.they turn around and give chase, pull us over and after finding out my pal was unlicensed, arrested him.we were searched.in those days i used to carry my Chris Reeve jereboam down the front of my pants.i was asked to remove the blade and when i did the sheath stayed behind.both cops reached for their guns.after asking me why i'm carrying the knife [for protection.from what?snakes was the first thing i thought of,and that's what i told the officer]the 1 policeman spent at least 10 minutes looking at the knife.when he found out how much he kept saying he could get a new gun for what i paid for the knife.eventually he returned the knife and left us with the car

Back in my "evil" days I've been caught with a custom dagger in my car visor, a gerber command 1, an asp, a cs push knife (can't remember the name -big one), make that 2 asps actually, an older mel pardue bm, an elishiwitz (sp) bm, a delica, and I think that's it. -Oh, and a viper throwing dagger too. There may be more, but you get the idea.
Since I've done some time (obviously) I haven't had any problems carrying a knife daily for (maybe 3-4 years). I am 24. If you're not doin anything stupid, you really shouldn't have too much to worry about- unless the cops wanting to be a dick.

As far as Ohio goes I think it is illigal for anyone to carry anything for the purpose of a weapon. Also, A concealed weapon doesn't even have to be concealed by law- only within reach. And, even if you get a concealed pistol permit, knives do not pretain. In Ohio, if they ask you if you have any weapons, say "no,sir, I have a pocket knife/tool."

Oh, buy the way, I was able to retreave my 2 bm and delica for the police impound later.

In some places, people never wave at the police. If you wave at them, they think you are trying to act innocent but are in fact guilty of something. Why else would you wave when nobody else does? In places like that, waving at the police will get you stopped and hasled. I know it seems odd, but it's true.

buckg,

I understand now. Thankfully my place isn't like that. It's a nice little community where people wave at the cops and they wave back. We're like a big happy family :D

One thing to always remember is NEVER cop to having a "Weapon". If an officer asks you if have any weapon on you, DO NOT say yes and hand him your knife. It's an admission of guilt. Tell them NO, then tell them you do have a pocket knife you carry to use as a tool.

A cop stopped my brother who is an electrician and he had a foot long piece of cable laying on the floorboard. The cop joked with him that it looked like a good little billy club. As soon as my brother agreed, he was taken out of the car and searched which got him in a lot of trouble for other reasons. The search was considered legal because he admitted to having a weapon and it wasn't in plain view because it wasn't on the seat, it was on the floorboard with stuff around it that partially covered it. Total BS, but just goes to show you, you can't even joke about having a weapon these days. Kind of like talking about guns or explosives in an airport. Not a good idea!

I'd just like to throw this story in, I was with my GF driving back down to Houston on I-45, she was driving. There was a cop on my right and I was in a good mood, felt like a dick, and for once was clean. So I looked at him and waved... he slowed back and got behind us (checking out our Liscence). After about 5 minutes he starts to pass us again and I look at him and I wave again lol. The bastard slams on his brakes and pulls us over. The entire time I am laughing hystarically (knowing we have nothing he can cite us for) he starts to ask for the usual but he got a call. I was dissappointed but, yea cops will pull you over if you wave. BTW I was in a suit and she was dressed as well, so I didn't look like a thug (not that I normally do).
