sent one of their Spydies into Spyderco for repair?

I tried to disassemble my D4 for the first time today and ended up stripping the screw closest to the pivot. Now the blade and washers are out and I can't remove that friggin screw.

I made a thread about this on the Spyderco forums but I thought I would make one here too. Some guys recommend screw extractors but I don't have a power drill and I have no idea what size I would need. Basically, I'm left with the feeling that my only resort is to send it in to Spyderco. Have any of you guys done this before? What's the going rate?

It will most likely be $20 for repair and $5 for shipping it back to you.

Or, you find somebody to remove that screw for you and use a clip screw instead (that works, I've just tried it at my Endura).

I personally would take my dremel and file a small slot into the screw to take it out with a slotted screwdriver. If you try that, be careful though not to damage the FRN handle next to the screw. Slow does it here.

Send it back. Be sure to include your name and address, an explanation of what happened. and what you'd like done. Send two checks with it, one for $5, one for $20. I can't speak for them, but my guess is that for a simple issue like that screw, they'll just cash the $5 one to cover return postage and return the $20 one,

Be careful if you use a drill. I had success two times and a big problem the third. You've gotta go straight in and do it quickly, or else it'll go off to the side and ruin everything else.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Since I lack a dremel or any other tool to extract the screw myself, it looks like I'll be contacting Spyderco's Warranty & Repair Dept. I'm not too worried. I've heard good things about their CS. But spending $20 for one screw would irk me some.

They'll probably tell you to go buy the D4 parts kit. You can find it for $17 or something on knifeworks or yourcornerstore.

What good would that do him? He cannot get the knife apart because of the messed up screw head.
