Has Anyone Modified their Seal Pup

I did. Years ago I put an edge on the top part toward the point, like on my U.S.M.C. K-BAR & my Pilot/Survival Knife. Good little knife. Also once painted the blade olive drab. Most of the paint has worn off but what remains gives it a very cool look! A few weeks ago I made a nice little lanyard for it out of black/tan/black hemp. Enjoy!!

I just got one the other day and was curious to see if any have modified theirs.

Sure did. I bought a Seal Pup several years ago, before I knew much about knives or what made a good user. Stock, it's good for about one grip, and since I don't need to swing it like a sword, that grip did nothing for me. It stayed under the seat of my truck for a long time, until I decided to fix it up a bit.

The serrations on the edge are right where I need a nice plain edge, so the first order of business was to very carefully and slowly grind them off. I didn't want to mess the heat treat up, so I took quite a while to grind it down on my bench grinder.

Once the serrations were gone, it was a recurve with a very rough edge. A lot more time went into smoothing that out, then working it on successively smoother stones until I actually had an edge on it.

Next, the stupid lip on the back of the handle had to go. I again used my bench grinder to work that off with, then smooth the shoulders so it was comfortable. I finished by using a file to work out the last nicks and dings.

The finished result isn't exactly pretty, but it's not ugly, either. The kydex sheath no longer holds it tightly, which is too bad -- the sheath was about the best thing going for the knife. However, I now have a knife that I could actually use if I wanted to!

If you're interested, I'll take some time and post pictures.

My best recommendation though, if you want a great user knife, is to get a RAT7 D2. Fabulous knife -- great size, shape, and steel. Best of all, the only work I had to do when I got it was to sharpen it! Well, and take the coating off.....
