has anyone noticed that Google really sucks lately?

Google used to be the best search engine out there, but lately it seems that it's gone the way of Yahoo. No matter what I'm searching for (especially if I need to do some research on something) the first several pages are nothing but links to buy stuff.

It came to me tonight why Google has gone to hell. Before their stock went public, it was the best search engine around, but since then they've had to keep up the advertising revenue so they don't die. It's pathetic.

Does anyone use a good, real search engine? Or are we stuck with this crap?

I've noticed this too. However, what REALLY ticks me off is when I'm actually looking to buy something and I'll click a link with a description of what sounds like a website and it turns out to be friggen EBAY. whether google is purposely doing this or not, they're still returning them as results. I also hate "directories"

Well, all the companies that depends on being ranked high to earn their money are quick to figure out the google tricks. And as google changes, it will also alter its ranking system as well.

It's called Googlebombing. The positive side is that Joe Citizen is much smarter than Corporate Joe and we will always find ways to defeat the bastards of the Movie, Music or Internet industry once their imperious technology is turned against them.

I have been using http://ixquick.com for a long time now. Google has its moments, but for straight-forward text searches, Ixquick weeds out a lot of the Google excess.

I agree 100% I use Yahoo when I'm looking for something I buy. But if I'm looking for info, I use ixquick.

I still use Google, even though I know people pay for advertising space to be on the first page. I was a little pissed off when I Googled a Gil Hibben knife, I think it was called Cats Claw, might've been something else, and one of the choices was kitty litter!

There are a number of "Google Hacks", and a book by that name. It's fairly easy to filter your search to eliminate sites, as in anything with a ".com"....
