I just recommended the knife as a canoe knife in another thread, and I began to wonder if anyone has ever re-handled this model to give it a more "traditional" look. It sure has a nice bushcraft-style blade in shape and in length, and as a bonus, it's impervious to rust.

First time I've seen it. Can anyone tell me more about H1 steel? I've read that it is TOTALLY rust proof, but what is it akin to? Edge holding? RC hardness? Overall performance?

its a tough steel edge holding is about the same as aus-8 with a good heat treat and I think the RC is 59-61 correct me if im wrong, I also read it can be taken all the way up too 67rc

It's a stick tang with a long radius to the shoulder that could make fitting a handle interesting. It'd be an awful lot of work, but I'd be interested in seeing what it would look like if someone decided to tackle it. :)

I've had one forever, and absolutely love it. This knife turned me onto H1 Steel. It is easy as heck to resharpen and holds for a good amount of time. I have not touched the handle on it though.

Alright, it looks intriguing. If it is in fact a great steel, why isn't it used more often? Sounds like a great candidate for surgical steels. In fact H1 sounds amazing. Shouldn't more folders be made of it?

^ HA! H1 is inferior steel, all the hardcore knife nuts rock the latest high speed low drag super unobtainium steel forged in the mountains of Mordor by militant tactical pixies. No one who is a serious knife user would ever dream of using steel like the Salt. nuh uh!

(its sarcasm people.....funny haha)

Its really expensive and hard to grind. I think the spyderco guys said the only kind of grind they can get on it is a hollow.

I've read here that H1 tends to "work-harden." That is, the edge tends to get tougher as you use and sharpen it.
