Has anyone seen my saw?

I know they exist, because so many forumites have touted their usefulness. But I cannot seem to find a GOOD wire saw. You may know them as SAS or "Commando" saws. I'm talking about the kind with the split-ring finger loops on the ends of an 18" length of twisted wire, not the chainsaw blade. There are cheesy versions available in any discount ('Marts brothers) department store. Usually packaged by Coughlin's or some other outfit. I have destroyed several of these already, typically by pulling a finger loop off of an end and sometimes by actually breaking the wire. Please tell me that there IS a more durable, quality model out there somewhere, and then tell me where!

Thanks in advance!

Brigade Quartermasters has the genuine SAS wiresaws. I've ordered a couple from them, and they work great. Run about 7 or 8 bucks, I think. Plus postage. BQM has a web site, somewhere.

They are easy enough to obtain in the uk. BCB international www.bcbin.com manufacture them along with a host of other survival issue kit. On their site under hand tools. They do ship to the US.

I would recomend removing the wire rings though, and replacing with para cord, much more comfortable and packs up smaller.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys! Those look much more promising than the Cough:barf: lin's crap I've been seeing. And you assure me that these same saws have withstood rigourous, real-world use? They are both apparently made in the UK, so they are likely the same thing. Now I just have to decide who to order from. It seems to me I was ticked off at BQ for something many years ago, but if I've forgotten what my grudge was, I suppose it's time to let it go. Then again, there is something to being able to say "Yes, I had my gen-u-ine SAS commando saw sent directly over from England."

Thanks again, but if this one breaks too, I will bear a grudge against you all forever- even after I've forgotten why.:D

The only problem w/ ordering from BCB is that the shipping to the US is about $50 (25 pounds) - ouch!

Machete,
Thanks for the post, I've actually experienced the same problems with the Coughlin's brand myself, so it was nice to see your question posted and answered. Although, if anyone ever has a need to cut pvc pipe or those square drains which hang under the eaves, I recommend using the Coughlin's saws. Cheap, disposable, and they work really well. We were making some instruments to take core samples of a river bottom once, and those darn cheap saws cut right through the P.V.C. drain pipe we needed to use. Guess that's kind of a random side note, sorry.
