I'm waiting on my BK-9 and I've read some people mentioning that the grip was a bit smooth and would be better if it were textured.

Has anyone tried putting skateboard tape on the the grips? It should be easy to take off the scales and trace them out on a sheet of skateboard tape and cut out a small section to use on the handle. I know there a various colors available and Lowes also has some non-slip tape to use on deck steps that might work well too.

If anyone has tried this I'd be interested to know if it helped.

It works on handguns, why not knife handles. You may want to wear gloves if doing much hard chopping. 'Course if ya' don't, it could be a good way to remove callouses.:)

Skate board tape would be VERY abbrasive, no? In my experiance the regular cheap sports tape for hockey sticks works well for big knives, very grippy, without abrasiveness.

3M has a stairway traction tape that is rubbery in feel and fairly rough textured. I've been using it on slick folder handles like my Spyderco Ayoob and other stainless steel handle models with a good deal of success.
Skateboard tape sounds like a good way to get rid of those pesky fingerprints off one's digits.:D

Another option would be Tourna Grip, which is an outer wrap for tennis racket handles. Not sure how durable it would be. I got to try out a Patrol Machete that was wrapped with it. It offered good security of grip without feeling tacky and was slightly resilient.
