Has anyone tried to dye micarta?

Thinking of taking some dye to my Micarta handles... Wonder if anyone ever tried this... I was able to dye a polymer rifle receiver with Rit Dye once and once it settled in... even solvent wouldn't get it off... So I'm wondering if it will work on Micarta. Any stories to share?

I think someone has tried leather dye. Maybe Valleytin or Heavy. Leather dye will stain ANYTHING forever! Especially your hands!

I'm thinking it would work. Maybe Dwayne knows.

Yeah. Someone used leather dye. Came out looking like G10 it was so black.

I'd recommend something less dramatic - like linseed-oil mix (Tru-Oil gunstock oil is good) for darkening black micarta. You can easily strip it off after if you don't like it too.

Jules (westllen) had this one triple dipped in black dye.

I would but I'm going to dye tan micarta black. so I'll probably have to go dark... what about furniture stain? Probably wash out over time. I'll try regualr Rit and see what happens.... if it winds up getting that crazy purple ink hue to it... I'll strip it and hit it with leather dye... but I got some Rit on hand. Anyone know where to buy strong leather dye?

Local shoe store?

Fiebings sells a shoe dye that to me seems exactly like their black leather dye.

What tan knife are you black-ing? Careful or they'll make you a ducci.

I used black leather dye once.

Worked real nice. No idea if it will come off onto your hands with extended use though...

I'd also like to know, because I'd like black micarta handles
on the Ontario RTAKII rather than the green canvas it comes with.

I got a FBM with Tan handles and gray blade... I'm going back and forth on Black handles and leave the blade gray... or strip the coat and have plain steel with tan handles which would be sexy too. I wouldn't have ordered gray/tan but by the time I had the extra cash to pick up an FBM Busse was getting danger close to not taking anymore orders so I jumped on one for sale on the board... My preference would have been black/black. But at least I have a FBM. And my LE should be on the way later on. That one will be left as is. This CG is going to be my main user... so I'd like to color it or strip it or something to get it a little more to my tastes.

Honestly, the Company Store should have them in... well... two weeks. None of us know what combos they will get but you can pretty much count on black/black being one of them.

I would pick up the one you really want at the Co. Store for retail and then put the tan/gray back up on the exchange.

Of course, refinishing the blades is fun and rewarding, too.

Did the Rit Dye last night with interesting results.... It didn't go all black. It turned a dark rosewood or walnut brown. With the Gray finish... it kinda looks badass! After I let it dry I sprayed it carborater cleaner and then Break Free Powder Blast (Two very potent solvents) to see if it would blast away the dye and it didn't. Turned out pretty nice.

My guy cleans it real well with somekind of alchohol cleaner nothing special then brushes it with a wire brush (lightly) and then puts the whole handle in a coffee can with black leather dye. leaves it in for awhile..maybe an hour or so. Takes the handle out and hangs it upside down from a string. when its just about dry he gentlely wipes the excess dye off any metal , rivets including. waits a day and does the same thing over and again on the third day. Easy, it seems a little tacky at first but cures in no time. seems to stay on well. Also if it ever dulls, just buy a black shoe polish liquid and hit it again. That kind with the foam top in the squezee bottle.
Its all good by me and dwayne and hes the leatherman.
Best to you Brian, let me know how you made out.

Any way to show a pic? :D

I'll try to get some up this weekend... I'm in the middle of Tax season right now... barely enough time to post a comment.
