Has anyone used Cryodur 2890/2990 from Deutsche Edelstahlwerke before?

Hi all,

Recently i came across these stocks:

http://www.zknives.com/knives/steels/steelgraph.php?nm=Cryodur2990&ni=6018

Has anyone here heard of this? if so, can you share if it is a good steel for blade making?

I have also compared it to Calmax.

Thank you for your input.

Jay:)

Hi Jay

DEW 1.2990 C - 1.00 Si 0.9 Mn - Nil Cr 8.0 Mo 1.6 V 1.6
CruWear C - 1.10 Si 1.10 Mn - 0.35 Cr 7.5 Mo 1.6 V 2.4 W 1.15

DEW 1.2990 is actually an 8% Cr coldwork steel , similar to a grade which was produced by Crucible name CruWear , but with lower Vanadium content and without Tungsten in it . In comparision you could expect CruWear to has a better wear resistance in it , due to the higher V content + W in it .

Compared to D2 / 1.2379 , 1.2990 / CruWear would have a better toughness and wear resistance . Grade to grade comparison , DEW 1.2990 would be very similar to Daido DC53 or Uddeholm Sleipner , which falls under the same family of 8% Cr cold work steel.

Uddeholm Calmax / AISI S7 is a completely different family of steel which has good toughness , but the wear resistance is no wherr near to 1.2990 / Cruwear . Also Calmax could only be hardened to approximately 56/58 HRC ) due to the lower C content ) while 1.2990 / CruWear can achieve 62/63 HRC instead.

Hi Alan,

Thank you so much for the info!
Great insight.

Have you come across the DEW 1.2890 then?

Jay

I have not come across any 1.2890 before . DEW does produces 1.2990 .

Where's your location ? Probably I could direct you to the right source for CruWear or 1.2990 grade .
