Has anyone used SuperGrit Sanding Belts?

I tried some, and maybe I was using them incorrectly or had bad luck, but they did not work for me at all. The 36 grit hardly cut, just burnished right off the bat. The cutting rate was similar to an 80 grit belt but introduced so much heat.

I work with 984f Cubitrons and they are a godsend for just $4 more.

The plain old ceramics from them are decent, but you get what you pay for. They wear quicker than some of the more premium belts on the market.

The Bora-7 belts are a bit better in terms of wear.

I've found it largely depends on the stock you're working. Fully annealed 1075 will respond a lot better to these belts than something along the lines of 3v.

Spot on about the Cubitrons. Where do you prefer to source your 984s?

I use the supergrit ceramics for a lot of my roughing work and some finishing depending on the steel. They work fine on annealed steel and steels with less than 4% Vanadium. 3V is about the highest V steel they give a decent cut on. S90V or 10V will glaze an 80 grit belt in seconds without gaining much material removal. I do keep an old carbide drill around to break the grain once or twice to get a little extra life.
As for the 984's, I personally have had very little luck with them. I get only minimal gains in performance over the supergrit belts. Definitely not worth the added cost to me.
Blaze belts still reign supreme for me and my uses, especially with the high V content steels.

I tried em and they are not for me! Wasn't impressed with Blaze belts at all either...

3M 984 are the belts! Nothing is even close! Get em from Pop's. Just what I see in my shop, grinding every day...

chknifemaker,

I suggested the 3M 984f belts to you in another thread you posted. You really should give them a try. When I started last year, I tried ONE Blaze belt and it didn't even compare IMO. The 3M's don't glaze over, don't leave residue on the platen, run relatively cool, and will still cut until the abrasive is nearly gone. When running a high SFPM, the 36 grit is scary how much steel it will remove! I grind post heat treat primarily with 60 grit and occasionally with the 80. These belts are well worth the cost for my needs. Buy one and give it a try man. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I think where you will find the most luck with those are on round-wheel grinding. The Blaze is great on flat-platen and awesome on round-wheel. The 3M 984F belts are really the best on flat-platen and round-wheel. Don't screw around if absolutely don't need to.
