Has anyone used the Spyderco 701MF and/or a Sharpmaker set to hone a straight razor?

Thinking about getting my first straight and wanted to know if the Spyderco 701MF stone set is big enough (size wise) and/or has enough of a coarse grit to hone a straight razor! I also have a Sharpmaker so I could put the stones on the bottom like a bench stone and use them that way.

Does the medium and fine stones have enough grit choice in them to use for this? I see some people that do honing and used a bunch of stones to do it with, like a 600, 1k, 3k, 5k, 10k and 20k. Does that seem like over kill?

Thx.

I do fine on my straights with the white ceramics on my lansky turnbox (1000 grit) and a strop loaded with herbs Yellowstone then bare leather. Some people go way farther, some not as much. You just have to see what you like.

Glad to hear! Thx. :)

No problem, just make sure to follow the razors angle not the sharpmakers and you're good.

Spyderco sells the ultra fine tri-angle stones, they aren't cheap, but they're worth the price.
