Has anyone used this strop?

I've never used or seen one of those so I can't speak about them. I use a strop block that I got from Knives Plus. They make their own and sell them for about $29.95, IIRC.

Handamerican products are some of the best, you can also get there leather from woodcraft.com

I am looking to buy a strop, and am wondering if anyone has used this strope or bought from this company? Is this a good strop? Is this company reputable? I don't know much about strops, but want to learn. Thanks in advance.

Stropping is in a category all by itself. It's what comes after sharpening and if done properly and regularly will reduce the time spent sharpening an edge to almost nothing! I have a dozen HandAmerican strops and have used them for years. They are excellent.

HandAmerican used to sell direct, but it appears that now the only sell through distributors. HA used to sell double sided strops mounted on a thick plastic board which sat inside a plastic base. Then they switched to a magnetic backed single strop and a plastic base with a mag-attractive plate in it. Now it 'looks' as if they are selling a metal base for the mag-backed strops. They also sold several different grades of stropping compound in different grits and different carriers. I have all of them, and use a dedicated strop for each. HA also sold both smooth surface and rough surfaced strops at one time but it looks as if this company only sells the smooth.

You can used their base or make one of your own. However, you WILL need some sort of base for these strops. If you are buying from this company, be sure to get some of the liquid chromium oxide and some of the spray diamond compound too. You will need to have separate strops for each compound. Get the smaller bottles of the stuff. The 2oz size will last you 20 years if used correctly! I made the mistake of buying two bottles of the 4oz size 15 years ago... so far I've used about one ounce! :o

Thanks for all of the replies.

Thank you Stitchawl for the advice, it's exactly what I needed. I'd have gotten the 4oz. bottle as well!:o It looks like I'll get the HandAmerican strop.

If the budget will allow, I'd get 2-3 strops.... Use one with a polishing compound and one without. Or one with white rouge, one with green, and one bare. No question about it... I went overboard. I have far more than is really needed, including a 'Red Russian' leather strop, (which is very specially treated horsehide,) some of HA's old black leather strops, half a dozen smooth and half a dozen rough leather HA strops, as well as several that I've made myself from good quality tooling cowhide that I pressed and turned into strops. I have different compounds for each of the cowhide strops with grits from 2,000 to 60,000. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FOR ALL OF THIS! (Two or three would be more than enough to get the job done.) But it sure is fun! :p
