Has Buck shipped knives without grinding the edge?

I just received a 2002 Buck 500 stag that its edge was not ground at all. The edge is flat.

Does anyone know if Buck has sent out knives without the edge ground-either intentionally or accidentally?

I have sent an email to Buck, but I am asking all of the Buck collectors if you have ever seen this happen.

Yes I have seen folks post photo's of those error knives in the past. Buck has also made Limited edition knives that intentionally never sharpened the final edge. I have one 110, two daggers, and one large Bowie that never had the edge put on the blades.

Very interesting. Thanks. What would the reason be for not sharpening the blade?

This is a limited edition, I believe. I think that it is a Centennial edition 2002 Buck 500 Sambar Stag. I wonder if Buck would put an edge on it?

Yes Buck will finish the edge for you.

Now for some of the larger blades and limited editions. Some states have issues with blade length so by not putting an edge on it makes it legal. The same is true for the dagger, some states have issue with double edged knives, no edge no issue. The 110 was a total custom and the maker thought it would be cool to not put the edge on it.

Here is one that the blade is completely flat. No grinding at all. Came from a retired Buck employee. Maybe a sample.

I have a few others that had the blade ground but not sharpened. They came from a different retired employee.

Wow! That one is not ground at all- just the blade blank.

The one that I have is hollow ground, but the edge was not ground. It is just flat. It came from a guy who used to be a rep for Buck.

Don't ruin the value. My spirit or 76 I showed Joe H and he said do not sharpen it.

I wanted to be able to use it. I guess that I will have to think about it.

I think these non sharpened ones that came from employees as sample knives. Not sharpened so they can show them and not have to worry about someone cutting themselves.

It seems all the unsharpened ones came from employees.

I believe that display knives used at trade show and conventions are unsharpened. I would think it rare for one to escape to the wild.
I have one unsharpened knife in my collection I purchased on ebay. This golden girl missed the sharpener.

With the stag it already has 'collector' value but the value over a regular LE with the factory edge is slight. I would say maybe 25.00 to 30.00 ? But it's one of knives that 2 or 3 collectors might fight over and be worth the hassle time and fees to list it on Ebay . If you like it and want to use it send it back to Buck. If you call they might even do it for free!

I say don't sharpen it. If you can't live with having a safe queen, pass it on.
