Has no one heard of Strander Knives?

The "Strander Knives" I mentioned in a previous thread are used in the oriented strand board industry. A strander has 144 knives placed on a huge disk powered by a 1000 horsepower motor. The strander cuts logs in to 1"x6"x0.025" strands to press into strand board. These knive are roughly 18" long, 3" wide, and 3/16" thick. As I said previously I have access to thousands of used ones and I'm sure they could make stinking big blades. I.K.S. is stamped on them, I should talk to the "engineers" at work, they could have some info for me. Point of reference stranders, are also known as "flakers".

What kind of steel are they, stainless or high carbon? If they are carbon and the price is inexpensive enough, I would like to have a few to play around with.

That sounds interesting. I'd guess any steel suitable for that purpose would make a good knife, but we need some idea what kind of steel it is or we won't know how to heat-treat it.

3/16" is pretty thin for a knife 3" wide, but even so ... it sounds interesting, especially if the used blades are available cheap.

Sorry guess I hit the wrong button on my mental calculator. The exact specifications of the strander knives are 18 1/2" long, 2 to 2 3/4 "wide, and 1/4 to 3/8" thick. I was using Canadian calcultions and forgot to add the exchange! The knives are made of a material called "uddeholm chipper" and are heat treated to Rc 55-58. I can get a whack if you arrange shipping, or we can do a trade deal.
