Has Photopoint disappeared again or is it just me?

I emailed a couple of pix to Photopoint this am -- no response. I tried to access their website and got "not responding."

Is it everybody or just me?

If they have disappeared again I want my money back. I'm sick of these flakes who take your money and run -- or just disappear from the face of the net or Earth or wherever they go to hide from their creditors.

I can't get through either. They are either dead or headed there.

Thanks Phil. Here's the front page......

That will save going back I think as the previous link took me to last July's problems.
I'm sure glad I didn'y subscibe to their service, but if a few thousand of us had perhaps they would still be open?:(
Guess we will never know.

I know several of us on this forum sent Photopoint money, including me. This payment was to be for services rendered.

Where's the service?

Berk, any recourse?

I'm sick of these outfits who start something thinking they'll all get rich and then just walk away when they see it's not going to happen. Where they hell is their sense of responsibility? I'm pretty bitter with the way Smoothsale behaved.

Uncle,

I guess the real issue would be recourse against what. If they have gone bust there isn't going to be much to collect from.

Fact is, the majority of new businesses, on or off the internet, go belly-up within a few years. Restaurants, retail shops, services, all succumb to inventory, cash flow and labor problems with depressing regularity. I lost a bundle some years back trying to start a word-processing company for lawyers, wound up paying for a huge computer that is now outperformed by any $800 PC. Internet businesses frequently start without any clear idea of the size of the (paying) market and big startup costs. In the past year PhotoPoint, CallWave, and BladeForums have gone from free to pay services. I've sent in my money to each, hoping to help keep them afloat because I value what I get from them, but realizing that it was no more a sure thing than playing the tables at a casino in Reno. Looks like PhotoPoint is the first to bite the dust.:( A pity, too, since it was the only photo service I've tried that was reasonably user friendly.

What's the possibility of getting a Geocities account like Terry and Sandi have?
Yes one has to put up with the ads, but to just have a place to post pix why wouldn't one of those outfits
work?
Isn't there at least 2 or 3 of them that are
free?
I've even got a webpage started somewhere that was left over when I was with WebTV.
And some of those WebTV guys and gals could do some pretty dayumed amazing things with those little black set top boxes!!!!!!!
Just ask our Bro Walosi!!!!!!!:)

fototime.com

Good software and integration between your pc and the internet. Easy to manage and maintain.

Look at the pix link below my sig. You can get more info from there.

Thanks for help. I think I'll stick with Ofoto -- I think it's an arm of Kodak and even though I'm not a huge fan of Kodak at least I think they may be around longer than some of the lesser knowns. I'm tired of the disappearances with no warning.

I can't believe PhotoPoint is toes up. I don't really mind the small monetary loss (remember, I'm disgustingly rich), but it had hundreds of kukri and kora pictures and descriptions that are now in etherland.

I will watch you computer geniuses to see what the alternative will be since I can't post any pix much less run the XMas version of 'the ugliest kukri contest'.

Screwed...

Maybe you could bail Photopoint out, John, and save us all.

Have you investigated Ofoto?

What really bugs me is all the pix we've posted here that are stored on that filthy, rotten Photopoint won't show.

When I started accessing the marvellous "Internet" back right after Al Gore invented it, I had an incredibly slow modem and a text-based browser that showed the infrequently-encountered graphics as "[IMAGE]" with no way of knowing what that meant or what I was missing. Now I have pop-up windows, JAVA applets, and Kishna-knows-what other visual aids to my browsing delight, and the latest Winddoze crashprone software to engage my 3-finger salute at least once a session. Maybe I'll read a book.

one problem with geocities as that they dont allow linking to photos, and have some pretty stiff bandwidth limits. Have you tried seeing what kind of storage your ISP gives you Uncle? My own website is thanks to the ISP, and while it may not sound like alot of space, I still have half of my alotted webspace left (I got a bunch of things not on the webpage that are stored on my website). I figure since Im paying for it (its included with my monthly ISP costs) I may as well use it. Alot of them ISPs have certain amounts of webspace alotted to members, that they dont tell members they have. Its worth a shot.

This type of problem is predictable on "free" or "voluntary pay" services.

I chose to host the FAQ on commercial server space provided by my local ISP for that reason. The cost is not prohibitive, and I have a contractual relationship with my service provider. Of course, they could still go bankrupt, but that is less likely with a business that charges a fair price for services provided.
