Has Remington ripped off Buck?

Remington (or whoever owns the name now) has released a 3 knife set for Xmass, a large folder (nothing like a 110), a 3 blade Stockman and a 2 blade Peanut. (All are Chinese made and are decent quality)

Now I realize that all 3 blade Stockman's will be somewhat similar just by nature, but this one seems an exact copy of the Buck 703.

I saw those box sets when I found the Buck box sets at Wal-Mart. It was in a box or a wooden frame and was $20 for the set.

The 500 and 700 series are my favorites from Buck. It is a shame Buck saw fit to drop the 700's. I have 4 of the 5 knives from the 700's.

It looks like the Remington has a full flat grind, while the Buck has a Sabre grind. And also the bolster/scale/pin layout is a bit different. When it comes to traditional knives, all of the designs are based on something else. That's why different makers use common names for patterns (trapper, stockman, canoe, congress, folding hunter etc. etc.)

I don't think Buck would have much of a case if they bothered to go after Remington for this.

TLC, if you get a chance could you post a picture with the blades open? Just curious for comparison. Thanks.

Here is the large lockblade open. It's the same lenght as a 110, but only half as thick. Like a 500 Duke on steriods!

I'll have to take a pic' of the stockman open today.

Thanks for the picture. Couldn't find the Remington's at the local WW. From the photos posted by TLC, they sure do look Buckish. Are fit and finish comparable to the Chinese made 373/371 series? If so, they would make good users for those that collect the 500 or 700 series and don't want to mess up a good original knife. Heck, I've wanted an unused 700, without harming a potential collectable. Interesting that the designs are so close to discontinued models from Buck. Strange world having a maker's outsourced designs in competition for the same price point market with the same maker's discontinued designs, outsourced under another brand.

Do you mean the blade is half as thick...or the whole knife???

I asked at my local Wally World yesterday...No 112's yet; and they had not even heard of a Remington special set...

If that Remington set ever arrives here, I will definately pick one up... ;)

Here is the Remington Stockman with a Buck 703, about the blades, the Buck 703 has been sharpened and used ALOT so the blades are thinned down some, Buck also reverses the Spey and Sheepsfoot blades in their slipjoints for some reason, would love to know why???.

Here is the large Remington lockback compared to a Buck 110.

I have determined that if I ever need a pic of ANY knife, just ask Tender Loving Care...

ALWAYS excellent pics!!!!

Too cool for school TLC...

  ...FANTASTIC PICTURES! ! ! ...Thanks a bunch TLC...That large Remington and it's siblings look pretty darn nice...The thickness across as I see it pictured on that large Remington looks a lot like the 500 Dukes. Gonna definitely grab a set of those if I see 'em. They would indeed be nice to use up as EDC's instead of a 500...

The quality on the Remingtons isn't bad either, the large lockback came razor sharp, but the 2 slipjoints wouldn't shave.

Thanks for the compliments on my pictures, I gotta show this one off. My friends brought me the hat from a Civil War Museum and with my User ID: I couldn't resist...

Were risin' agin' and armed with Bucks!

Located one of the Remington sets in the WW on the other side of town. The stockman is well made--no gaps or goofs, sharp, lots of snap. I like that it is short like the 303, but wide like the 301. Nice feel. The lockback was nearly as good, a few gaps on the handle, but still a good user (a little big for EDC for me). The peanut was actually missing a handle pin on the concealed side and will go in the box of examples of fresh from the factory junkers. Just check the concealed side of the knives before you give one of the sets as a gift. Still, the lockback and the stockman are probably worth ten dollars each but I still generally feel better buying a genuine Buck (for the warranty and all that).

Thickness of the handle, the Remington is much slimmer.

From your pics, I'd say the blade is thinner as well...just judging with a scale held to the monitor, the Remington looks like ~.100", compared to the Buck 110 ~.120"... :(

Thanks for the pics! What camera do you use (or did I already ask?)...

Nikon Cool Pics 2100 digital , I think I gave like 120.00 for it new 2 years ago. It's not even that fancy of a camera, but I have to admit I have 2 friends that are professional photographers and they have taught me alot about lighting and angles and such. That helps more than having a real expensive camera.

I wish I had highspeed internet, the photos you guys see are actually reduced "Medium Quality" and resized from 1600X1200 to 600X450, from around 500K down to around 50K. I wish I could put up those high quality pics', but with dail-up it would be a PITA! :D

So I searched the 703 to get some background. TLC's post from around this time last year shows a reply from Matt321 with a photo of the same blade set up (sheepfoot and clip at the same end) as the Remington copy. Probably where the inspiration came from. I'm pretty impressed with the stockman, nothing but sturdy. Thanks for the heads up.
