Has the Custom Shop Ever Made a Birth Knife

My wife is having our first in about 5 weeks. I was planning on taking my M9LE to cut the umbilical cord. I was thinking there may be a better tool for the job and if anyone could make it, it would be the Busse Custom Shop.

I guess you could have them make one for you, not sure if five weeks will be enough time and they are a bit expensive. I have seen them make a gorgouse knife to cut a wedding cake with so you could ask....

Not sure if the Custom Shop has made a special "birth knife," but Jason (Gravelface) used a Busse to cut the umbilical cord of his last peanut.
If I'm not mistaken it was a Custom Shop Active Duty. I think the doc was caught off guard a bit, but Jason can be pretty persuasive.
There are pics around here somewhere.

Yea it's probably getting a little close to the deadline, especially if she goes early, but I thought about it last night. And for the price I could probably get nice custom hunting knife that would see more use.

Would love to see the Dr. and nurse's faces when you whip out that M9LE :D Ya'll watch 'is. ;) Just kidding bro

Maybe a hack, skeleton key, or culti would work too? There was a beautiful custom Hack for sale awhile back on the exchange.

Congrats in advance on your new family member and one of the best days you will ever have

I wanted to use either a Busse or my XM-18, and my Doc said that he'd have to sterilize the knife first at some ridiculous temperature, so I deferred to the regular tool.

Besides, wifey and I banked our daughter's cord-blood, so I needed to make sure it was uncontaminated.

Well to some, it's a special day and having one made is extra special that you just can't put a price on. And after wards, you the knife will always remind you of that event! Well that's what I thought when the one member here had one made for his daughter's wedding. I think the thought was priceless!

I am guessing there is no way a doctor would allow it, as cool an idea as it is. With as sue crazy as this country is they are opening themselves up to a major lawsuit, can you imagine, God forbid, that the baby got an infection. I had surgery on my hip last year, I asked the doctor to take a picture with one of my knives by the open wound (thought it would have made a really cool post) but he explained the legal ramifications to me if there were ever complications.
That said, you should look into a custom celebrating the birth, showing the date and name of your new baby. Congrats btw, I am happy for you. Good luck

I did my best to avoid looking at the whole process when my son was born. I was offered to cut the cord and passed, very quickly. I likely missed a nice opportunity but dang just thinking it though makes me a bit nauseous.

I cut my son's cord with a Spyderco Paramilitary. They tried to hand me a pair of shears to do it with, but I just pulled my knife from my pocket and sliced through it in one clean go. The doctor gave me a little bit of a look, but didn't care. It was over so fast, there was no time for anyone to say anything. My wife doesn't even know I used my own knife- she was otherwise concerned with what looked like a shotgun blast to her crotch. :barf::barf::barf: Umbilical cords are weird- they don't look at all like what you think they would. It looks almost exactly like opaque, white surgical tubing. And it's long- looks kinda like a telephone cord, about as thick as a finger. It felt like rubber, cutting through it.

Oh, the birth experience- what a thing of beauty. :D It's more like a really graphic, disgusting scene from a slasher movie. It's worth going through, because you get a sweet baby out of the deal, but otherwise.... :barf:

If you want to use your own knife to cut the cord, my suggestion is not to tell anyone about it before hand. Just whip it out and do it when the time comes, like it's the most natural thing in the world. If you say anything to a nurse or doctor, it's likely that they're legally obligated to say "no". But nobody will even mention it after the fact.

Edit- oh, and use something small. You're likely to be very tired and emotional, and the last thing you want to be doing is waving a huge knife around your baby, your hysterical wife, and probably 6 or 7 medical staff in the room. There's a lot of activity going on in a relatively small space. You don't need a cleaver- what you're doing is essentially slicing through a hot dog.

That sounds like a plan, and the stains left on the SR101 will be an extra reminder!

An Infi infection. That could get expensive since I already have one.

The baby won't get an infection from anything you cut their cord with. They clamp the cord off good and tight before they have you cut it- the connection to the baby has already been severed before you cut the cord. Believe me, when a baby is born- it's born into about the furthest thing from a sterile environment. It's friggin' disgusting.

Sure you could! Go design an Alpha Hunter on Buck's website... Add a gut hook. Perfect! I think some shiny S30V with giraffe bone scales would be sexy!!! I mean... if yer not gonna go with a Busse... of course. :D
