With the election slowly approaching I have a question...
Has the politically correct attitude gone to far?

Should people be allowed to express their opinions, even if they are unpopular?

Isn't it the unpopular, ugly, and just plain nasty views and opinions that need our protection the most?

How do you feel about the subject?

Couple of quotes

You should protest about the views of people you disagree with over major moral issues, and argue them down, but you should not try to silence them, however repugnant you find them. That is the bitter pill free speech requires us to swallow.
Julian Baggini

One of the problems with defending free speech is you often have to defend people that you find to be outrageous and unpleasant and disgusting.

This isn't the place for this.
I'm not sure why you thought it fine to bring this back into the forum after the other thread was closed.
All posters here need to remember whos forum you are in and what you are disrespecting with this BS.
Please take it somewhere else or offline.

First off, I agree.

But then out of pure curiosity now that this has come up; how off topic CAN you get in the cantina?

Gehazi left or was banned due to him expressing his opinions passionately. Guess it's purely up to the moderators.

BTW "man up" means a great deal to a lot of people. Don't Give me crap just because you don't get it.

You know, if an actual Utopia were ever possible, it would have no rules or laws. You know why? Because it would be up to every one to behave, and they wouldn't be needed. The Cantina doesn't have such lofty expectations as they are unattainable, but it was damn close once upon a time. Any topic is fair game within reason as long as its not intended to be offensive, mean spirited, or vulgar. There are other places on this site that cater to that if you feel the need to ask it on BFC.

Here's how I feel about the topic: Anything political doesn't belong here. I'm not saying we need to censor the threads or come crashing down with a hammer because of lines being draw in the sand. It's just that this is one place where people can get away from that crap. Look, there has been an "election" non-stop for the last dozen or so years. The political rhetoric "off season" has grown shorter and shorter inasmuch as the latest presidential election has been going on since the spring of this year with the election still 11 months away from now. We already have enough outlets for cynical nastiness and polarization. I would much rather come to the Cantina and talk about projects or dogs or anniversaries or the fun of shooting guns or...well just about anything that isn't covered on cable news.

I would implore people to keep the threads here friendly. Spirited disagreement is to be expected, but goading will not. When in doubt if I should post something, I ask myself does it have to do with the ballot box, the pew, or the bedroom? If so, I keep my trap shut.

The neat thing about free speech is that it is the true litmus test of moral character. There are those who speak their minds with eloquence and oration. There are those that blurb out whatever is on their mind without consideration of others. In other words, it allows people to talk themselves out of the gallows of a bad situation, but it also gives some enough rope to hang themselves.

I'm sick today. I'm grouchy with a mild fever. I don't want to have to close two threads in one day. So, I'm going to let this one ride for a bit. See how it plays out. Maybe everyone can meet in the middle and part ways as friends with a bit of conversation. If not, this one will get locked down too, i guess.

On a parting note, free speech is not protected on this site as it is privately held.

Your post was about political correctness because some guy got a thread locked up where you called him something you think is typical female.
Then here you wrote Man Up
That of course should be Woman Up if you want to be politically correct. :-p

Do you really think I meant that or is it more likely that I was kind of on your side and just pulling your leg?

I think it's truly a case of a lot of overreaction of late. If one wants to be offended he can be offended a 1000 times a day by just about anything.

A lot of meaningless terms can be blown up into mountains when they really aren't that big a deal.

I'm 100% agreed with Steely. I love good conversation about most anything. Guns sadly these days are synonymous with politics it seems and that's really sad.

So brothers and sister remembering there are no absolute 1st amendment rights here, lets be happy happy happy and try to keep it that way.

On a heavier note, I just shelled out 497 bucks of my Auntie fund to get my van fixed. I'm not happy but when 5 oclock hits here I'll be happier than I am now.

Didn't see it as disrespectful... That's your opinion.

Would you like someone coming into your house and starting unnecessary drama and trouble?
That's what you did in Yangdus house. She deserves better.

Gehazi was banned at one time. I got him umbanned. He isn't here because he was in an accident.

If this forum is going to be allowed to be turned into W&C lite...... count me out. I come here to stay away from all that.
See you all sometime in the future.....maybe.

I consider HI main page as the "house" of the forum. I wouldn't dream of posting any type of information except for HI business. I post pictures of HI quality all the time on the main page. I always try and answer anyone's questions. Heck someone on YouTube recently reached out to me because he rolled the edge on an old fox folly and had other issues. I took the time to help him with everything.

This is the Cantina, or bar of the establishment. I had thought it was a good place to discuss anything as long as it was "clean".

There have been posts on religious holidays. That I bet that offends some. NOT ME! We should all feel free enough to express our believes as long as we don't trample on the rights of others.
Another thing... I helped "build" this house just like everyone else who purchases products here. I shouldn't be called out like a stranger when you don't like my posts. I won't get into how much I have spent but it's getting close to five figures within he past two years.

Lets just agree to disagree. I felt you were being disrespectful towards me. Again it is what it is.

I think you over reacted, but that's just my opinion. We've never really ever seen eye to eye since day one. I guess we are like oil and water... That's fine, it is what it is.

Getting offended, outraged, indignant, and angry are easy and often unhelpful responses. I find it more useful to take the opportunity to learn something from someone else, and to educate them if I can about their (perceived) transgressions. Instead of trying to shout someone down or put them in their place, which destroys us both, I like to try to connect and learn from things that "offend" me. There is a lot of good information in those unpleasant feelings, and I would hate to waste it by going off on someone and stooping to their level.

I don't appreciate when people bring drama to my house, but I love when I can use it for mutual enlightenment.

HI forumites are some really neat people, and I was surprised to see this kind of thing pop up. I thought about staying out of it, but I think my approach is valid and potentially beneficial. Just remember to be kind to everyone you meet, because we all carry heavy loads (even on the internet).

I took the time out of my day to give him all the proper information on contacting Auntie.

I over reacted? Please take a look in the mirror. Some of you think because you spend money here you get to do as you wish. Which isn't the case.

FYI, The Cantina is part of the HI forum and should be respected as if you are sitting in Yangdus house. Would you act this way in her house?

That really sums it up. Don't talk about anything here that you wouldn't talk about in aunties back yard while barbecuing and having a couple beers. You can relax and shoot the breeze but you're still a guest in her house.

Until Steely comes along, lets just pretend this one is done and not feed on each other.

Sheesh, never seen nothing like this here before.

Yep this.

Thing is everybody is sensitive differently.
Someone might think they are just relaxing while somebody gets offended by it. Then comes a third person and calls out the first who thinks he didn't do anything wrong.
Now he's asking everybody else for what they think and gets told to "stand down" like when on a shooting range and doing something life threatening.
If that happens in aunties BBQ place what would be the best cause of action?
A few beers and momos and change the topic, back to what we all like Kukris!
