Has the sun set on pocket watches?

I have a sentimental attachment to pocket watches. Yes, a pocket watch is not exactly very convenient in this modern age but I like its old world charm.

Pocket watches are still well liked in parts of England. Once at a flea market in London, I came across a man who wanted to sell his pocket watch for five quid which I thought was a steal.
Alas, he was negotiating with a makeshift stall vendor, so that left me out of the picture.

Some pocket watches are extremely well made and the mechanism inside reveals a period when things, even though mechanical, were done with great care and passion.

:)

Seiko just came out with a pocket watch! It's getting good reviews at the Seiko & Citizen Forum. See yah.

I have 2 Victorniox pocket watches with the leather cases that attach to your belt. One was a wedding gift from my wife, and the other I recently picked up on ebay. It's a slight variation of the other and allows me to carry one without worrying about messing up the wedding gift!

I agree with you about the charm of pocketwatches. I'd also like some old ones, though, like a Longines or Omega. I really like that Hamilton you have pictured. Where might I obtain one?

Normally, selected pocket watches can only be obtained at either high-end watch shops or at second-hand watch shops.

Some of the more popular watches are usually collector's items.

You may want to enlist the help of reputed watch shops to obtain pocket watches like Hamilton.

Nice watch.

The sun has set on pocket watches for me because i have too much other junk in my pockets. Plus, I like the functions that digital watches offer (alarm, timer, light, etc).

I've always loved pocket watches. However, the only pocket watches I can find now are way out of my price range as only very high end companies make them.

I have a fondness for pocketwatches, if only that it leaves my wrists free. I must be fairly careless with my hands because I can scratch and ding any watch on my wrist, even a G-Shock. And with the weather here, my wrists are usually well covered by outer clothing so I can't read it anyway. I'd like a modern, titanium illuminated pocketwatch, something like the current Smith and Wesson model. Are there any other modern tactical pocket watches?

As far as machanical pocket watches go, the Soviets (whoops) Commonwealth are exporting 17 jewel windups in plated brass cases in a variety of styles. (Mine was supposed to be stainless - oh well - buyer beware.)
These run from 39.00 US on up with crystal backs, second hand dials, and cheesy chains common. Mine is about 10 years old with a hammer and sickle on the dial. My cold war trophy but works well for cowboy, too. Good wear on boot days chainsawing.

Very, very nice piece golok! I've always loved pocket watches though wrist watches can be handier. I've got some super deals on some very inexpensive but nice PW's on www.timezone.com in the past but you have to be very careful when dealing there. I'll always have a special place for PW's because one was my very first watch when I was a kid. As far as Ryan, (is this THE Ryan from S&C?), alluding to the Seiko Railway watches, I couldn't resist awhile back and picked one up. :)

Hi Ryan W from S&C ;)

Hello dullone,
They are available from www.higuchi-inc.com or www.k-seiya.com They are both located in Japan but they are both very honest gentlemen and provide superb service. Their prices include shipment to the USA and you won't believe how quickly they deliver. However, you'll have to e-mail them and request one because they are not a stock item. I received the best price from Mr. Higuchi and they run from $137.00 to $160.00. Mr. Kobayshi, (Seiya), may have one in stock at this time.

I don't know if you know this but they are quartz PW's and come with 10 year batteries and their movements are used in Seiko's higher end dive watches. They are still used to this day by the Japanese Railway.

Gene,

THANK YOU! I really appreciate the info. I'm in the process of trying to contact Higuchi-Inc. regarding ordering one. You really do meet the nicest and most helpful people at BladeForums.com

A very good friend of mine deals in really fine antique watches - the ones that often run to 5 and even 6 figures. He tells me that in the last dozen years the market for them had pretty well gone - primerally because the collectors of these beauties have also passed on and the "younger" generation of folks who can afford such collectables aren't interested in pocket watches.

On the up side, the net result is that more and more of them are ending up in museums and other collections that are opened to the public, so more people can get ot enjoy them.

For anyone interested, the Seiko watch shown in Gene's post above is a model SVBR001 and costs 17,000 yen (about $140, includes s&h) from Higuchi-Inc.com

dullone,
Thank YOU and yes, BF is FULL of great folk! You're going to love this PW and just think, except for the occasional time change, it'll work tirelessly for 10 years. Let us know you're thoughts when you receive it and please tell "Huggy", (Mr. Higuchi), Gene said "hi"! Like I said, he's an honest man that will serve you well.

Maury,
I think your friend is correct in his assessment regarding pocket watches. They really have fell out of favor with the general public. I have picked up a couple in the last two or three years for $40.00-$50.00 each that would have sold for at least $200.00-$300.00 just a few years ago. All the better for us that love 'em!

I hope the sun is not setting on pocket watches! I love them. I have 2, but on has to much sentimental value to wear, and the other is dead.

the cone, can you post a link where I can take a look at these soviet pocket watches. They sound interesting, and not very expensive. Thanks, Reagan

I ordered the Seiko RR watch from www.higuchi-inc.com in Tokoyo, on Nov. 5th. It was delivered to my suburban Chicago door today (Nov 09) by the USPS. Good job everyone!

Great looking watch!!!!!!! :)
