Has This Ever Happened To You? Blade is Magnetized.

I've been on a bit of a knife buying spree lately. Just today, I received two new ones; a Brisa Scara 60 with an RWL-34 blade, and an L.T. Wright Hevi Patriot in A2. I lined-up the two new ones on the arm of my Adirondack chair, along with two other small fixed blades I had on hand, just to get a size comparison. As I was placing them, the Brisa spun and sort of slid under the Hevi Patriot. At first, I thought my chair might be at a slight angle, but it wasn't, and then it happened again. It turns out the Brisa was drawn magnetically to the heavier Patriot. So, I tried it with my regular O2 steel Patriot, and same thing. When I tried it with my N690 Arno Bernard Meerkat...nothing. The Brisa is magnetized. Anybody? I'm curious.

I can't remember all the details, but it can happen during the grinding process. I have had mild cases before. they can be de-magnetized if it bothers you.

Thanks for the quick reply. It doesn't really bother me, but sometimes I carry my small fixed blade in a slender pocket sheath, next to my minimalist wallet. Do you think my bank and/or credit card can get wiped out?

I doubt it was on purpose, but I remember having a work knife that that had a magnetized blade. I found out when I noticed small screws and metal shaving sticking to the blade.

Just as strangely as that "feature" appeared, it petered out after a couple of weeks.

Cue Twilight Zone theme...

If they use a magnetic chuck while surface grinding, it can get magnetized. You have to deguass it to remove that.

If there are any machine shops near you, they will probably have a degausser, and it should be cheap because it's a pretty quick process.

I’m pretty sure I magnetized my Cold Steel Code 4 by sharpening it on a very old, very cheap diamond sharpener that had the sharpening medium applied in “dots” or holes on a steel plate, not a complete layer of the material applied edge to edge. It was one of those two sided (coarse/medium) portable sharpeners that stows in its own handle. I speculate that once I wore the medium down enough, I was eventually just sliding the blade on enough of the steel plate, that it caused the magnetism.
