I'm not a die hard collector. I have a small collection of Buck fixed blade knives. However, at some point I got on an email mailing list and get occasional emails from Buck. Sunday I think I saw an email for the buck of the month and saw that it was the Model 117. That got me kind of excited. I remembered that the 117 was available for a little while a couple years ago, but that I had missed my chance to get one, so I made a plan to go to the bow shop where I get some of my knives and see if they could order me one. So yesterday, I ran down to the store and low and behold, they had a 117 in the display case even. I couldn't believe it. They even had another one in the cabinet unopened in the box. So I happily bought it and went on my way. Later when I got home I opened the box and looked at it and thought, hmm, this looks familiar. Opened up my little cabinet and pulled out the Buck 117 that I had bought a couple years ago when they were available. The sheath was even worn a little which reminded me that I've actually already worn and used it hunting either this past season or the previous one.

Then I realized my confusion. Around the time the 117 was available, the 212 was also temporarily available. The 212 was the model that I had missed and didn't get back then. But in my mind, I had associated the 117 with the 212 and then assumed that the 117 was the one I needed when I saw the email. Probably some kind of psychological scenario where you want the item available to be the thing that you wish it was or something. anyways, so now I have a brand new Buck that I don't need. I know a lot of people buy extras on purpose, but for whatever reason I'm not really interested in having a duplicate. Maybe I'll put it up for trade in the for sale section.

So, have you ever bought a knife thinking that you didn't already have it, only to realize later that you actually did?

I can't say that I've had that experience, yet. But I'm fairly new to collecting Buck knives, so perhaps in the future? Who knows?

The 117 was unavailable for a while, but was just recently re-released. I was happy to get mine, it's a great knife. If you decide to part with it, I'm sure it will be easy to find a home for.

I'm with you on the 212, as well. Maybe we will see another run of them soon?

I have not done it with a knife yet, but I'm sure I will soon. I do buy books quite frequently and find the other copy when I get home.

oh bummer, I just realized I can't sell or trade without a paid membership.

We do still have a handful of 212IWSLE from last year left if you were interested. I would call customer service and have them place an order for you. 212 Ironwood/Brass, S45VN
Thanks! but that version is definitely out of my price range. Very beautiful knife though!

I ALMOST did a few weeks ago..A BG-42 112 NIB with finger grooves. I have a identical 112 and up to the very last minute I was going to bid..but did not. It was a close thing since its a great 112 rarity and I had looked for mine since 2009..

Hasn't happened w knives, but has with other things I collect. Best thing to do is start some type of data base early on... photo album, spread sheet, etc. Very hard to catalog once you get to a certain point.

ok, Gold member now :)

if anyone wants a 117, let me know!

Many times and it's not just limited to knives. I'm also in to Ham radio and I have a Yaesu FT65-R handheld. When I bought a new laptop a few months ago, I discovered that the programming interface cable for it no longer works with Windows 11, due to the driver. Yaesu came out with a new cable that is Win11 supported, but I was loath to buy it due to the cost. So a few weeks ago I finally decided to break down and buy it, it arrived a few days later and when I went to put it in my "cable bag", I found that one was already there. I have absolutely no memory of previously purchasing one... kinda scary, makes me wonder what else is around here that I don't know I have.

I can't have more than 1 of a knife that I like......?
Uh-oh.

😬
haha. not at all. YOU can have as many duplicates as you want. I just generally would rather have something different over something I already have. But I can definitely see the value of having backups of favorite patterns.
