Has Your Hinderer ever gone missing?

You know the feeling, you reach down to feel your pocket for your Hinderer and instead of feeling the clip or the knife all you feel is emptiness. Then the panic sets in, like when you first realize that you have become lost in woods (disorientated for those who are experienced woodsmen), or momentarily losing sight of your kids in a crowd (lesser of course) or you can"t find your dog (until you realize he is on your bed napping). Well, my XM 18 pictured below came up missing after a short nap.

I woke up and was headed out when I reached down to check the status of wallet, car keys and Hinderer, oh no! Hinderer is not in right front pocket! I went back upstairs to my bedroom and checked the bed and no Hinderer, checked my dresser top where I routinely put it along with other essentials; Hinderer pens, Hinderer armorer tool, wristwatch, wallet, you know the routine. Well, it was not there, okay panic is starting to ebb into my brain, pushing out rational thinking. However I start the rational process of when did I see it last. Prior to my nap I had just returned from the airport driving in a heavy snowstorm, okay I was in the car, check the car. I grabbed one of my EDC flashlights that has 600 lumens and proceed to thoroughly search my car under scorching light, negative results, now panic is starting to overwhelm any minute rational thinking that I had left. Bursts of unconnected random thoughts were now feeding my already degenerating thought process. Did it fall out at the airport, did someone pick it up, did TSA find it and now resides in a bushel basket that makes it way to on line auctions to sell by the pound, is it in my snow covered driveway, what knife will I EDC now?

Finally I catch my breath and try to put the situation into prospective, even though it is a Hinderer it is only an object. So now I start the search process anew without the panic driven craze. I went back to my bedroom and methodically pulled the blankets off, the sheets and finally the extra quilt at the foot of the bed and there it was, I found my Hinderer my "holy grail"! I picked it up and looked it over similar to that of a mother seal finding its offspring amidst the sea of babies on the beach. Yep it was my XM with Pond Scum Scale that has resided in my right front trouser pocket continuously for the last several months and now was returned to its assigned position.

I have no idea how it worked its way out of my pocket ( it has a very strong clip) and ended up under a quilt at the end of the bed. Then I looked at my dog, Daniels who has a habit of stockpiling various objects in his own bed. Daniels has a decent pen collection, cat toys, and socks that have to be purged daily. He was resting beside me when the XM went mising, so I wondered what part he might have had it this whole episode. He is pictured below with one of my XMs

Tell me your story.

Great story and story telling FO, glad it worked out the way it did. I don't want to jinx myself but, I don't think I have one (story) I will have to think on that one maybe I do and I blocked it out due to the emotional distress it would have levied upon my psyche.
I do suspect Daniels though, I've seen His "type" before all cute and cuddly....I don't trust him for a minute.
Look at his face, sitting there on the chair..head cocked in the direction (ever so slightly) of his next conquest the slightly heavier Ti XM.
Basically he is thinking, " Hey old man, start coughing up some more kibbles at mealtime or your next snoozey snooze this is going missing".
I'd give in.
We are getting too old for such drama, could stroke out and then what! ;)

Great story and thanks for sharing, I felt like I was there, feeling the same gut dropping feeling, then the twist at the end - superb story.

The last time I felt that awful feeling was about 10 minutes before check in for a flight from NZ to London via overnight in Kuala Lumpur. I reached into my back pocket for the ticket to find nothing.
I retraced my steps back to the toilet I visited about 15 minutes earlier, It was about a 400m walk and to my amazement and good fortune it was on the floor about 20m from the toilet door.
That would have been a $3000 mistake!

Yes..my XMs go "missing" from time to time but have yet to go gone. I deploy the tool, use it and if necessary drop / place it aside to continue with the task(s) of the moment. Once I'm able I pick things up again and carry on, I do.
Occasionally, I have to leave gear in one area to address something in another area and return to the gear...so far no worrisome stories there.
On vacation in a FL condo last year one 3.5 went missing. I was using it to do this and that then set it down on the couch. It was a sofa sleeper and spur of the moment we decided to pull it out and get lazy in front of the television to wind down a bit. I then left the condo to attend duties outside and after about a half-hour returned to the condo, reached for my 3.5...gone!
Went on a hunt, score...it was in the neatly stacked pile of sofa cushions sitting atop one and covered by two.
Yep, on the initial recognition of loss, it was felt...but not panicked I retraced every step.

Awesome Story, I haven't had that happen with a Hinderer, but have had it happen to a CRK Sebenza a time or two ( which is just as bad ). Each time, It was found, but believe me, I know what you mean about the panic that sets in.

Thanks for the reality check on the panic issue, nice knowing others have had similar experiences.

And by the way Rubi you are right about Daniels, I don't trust him, the worst part he as a brother Jack who is also a schemer. Here is a picture of the duo "Jack and Daniels" five year old males born on the Fourth of July to boot! This is their baby pictures. For the younger members of the forums this what happens to us when the kids leave the house.

Coming up with their names is another story, but easy enough to figure out.

I lost my 3" in the well of a engine room of a ship when overhauling the main engine. I must've somehow snagged tha clip against something and it was gone. Only later I noticed it missing snd searched the whole ship. In a desperate last attempt I used a magnet to sift through the oil and grimewater of the lowest point of the ship. Thank god the pocket clip is magnetic or else it wouldve been lost. I havent carried the knife after that for work.

Funny when ever I drop a socket or a fastener, they always end up in a nasty unreachable puddle of yuck, in the darkest crevasse..... Good Story!

Art V don't you hate that sinking (no pun intended) feeling when you realize it is gone. So happy you found it, however life is too short to not enjoy it, put it back to work!

Great story and good recovery. The best part is, after you cleaned it up a bit, I am sure it was as good as new. I have gotten my 3" in some nasty crap and it always comes out like new.

Maybe the hardware is magnetic? The pocket clip is titanium.

Yeah I edc it sometimes, it`s still the clip that bothers me. I don`t like that large lip. and I wish it would be tighter. I bent it ever so slightly so its tight but the stonewashed ti is really smooth.

Oh yeah a few scratches and dings, but I don`t plan on selling it anyways. You are right the blade is magnetic, so my guess is the magnet snatched on that.
