Has your lock ever become sticky?

I recently received a used sebenza and the lock is sticky. I am going to send it back to CRK for them to fix. Has anyone else ever experienced a sticky lock? I've never read about sticky locks on this forum so I'm assuming it is pretty rare.

I've never had any sort of problem with the Sebbies or Mnandis that I've owned. But you've got me curious. Could you elaborate a little on what exactly it is you mean by a "sticky" lock. Is it an inordinate amount of friction between the lock and the blade, is the lock not flexing as well as it once did or is it something different?

I assume you are referring to the lock bar sticking to the blade tang when you say "sticky" lock. Sometimes simply taking the knife apart and cleaning it up, then relubing will take care of the problem.

Sorry I was unclear. Artsig is correct, the lock bar sticks to the blade tang. I've tried taking it apart, cleaning it, lubing it with different stuff including CRK grease and pencil graphite, all with no luck. I've asked CRK about it and they said there is really nothing I could do to remedy the problem and that I would have to send it back to have them fix it. Chris also wants to take a look at it. The fact that Chris wants to look at it and the fact that there are seem to be no reports on this forum of the problem leads me to believe that it is very rare. However, its funny that this is my second sebenza with the same exact problem. My first sebenza had this problem. I bought it used also but I think the problem developed a few days after I got it. It became so sticky that I was no longer able to unlock it with my thumb. Sending it back to CRK and having them reharden the lockbar face fixed the problem and now 5 years later it does not stick at all.

i bet some1 switched out the blade that originally came with the knife and therefore is an improper fit.

when i ordered a few damascus blades 4 my knives, sometimes i would forget which regular blade went with which knife and this is the problem that i would be left with

One of my large Classic wood inlays was purchased NIB from a dealer. The lock on it was VERY sticky, it would take both thumbs to disengage it and I have strong hands. I took it apart and examined the lock bar with a 10X loupe and found a small burr on the engagement surface. Took the burr off with a very fine stone and now it's the smoothest of all my Sebenzas.

Hmmm, interesting. I have never had this problem with the lockup on a Sebbie or Mnandi. Had it once on a microtech lock bar, but that has been the only time, and I have owned quite a few folders.

This problem can also arise from certain lubricants that are used for the knife.
I have had several sebenzas that have perfectly fine lock up great and release, with the proper amount of force. However, the use of certain lubricants can cause it (the lock bar) to slide over farther than it should, from what I believe to be a superior lubricating property. Causing it to stick. This usually wears off with a few dozen openings and a good wiping of the lock bar. This happened to me last week while using a lube called "fluid film" I grabbed at work. The knife was so hard to open I had to use two hands, now it's fine. It has also happened while using tough glide.

Later, Jeff
