I just aquired a Hastings/Parrish bowie at auction. I know a little about Don Hastings, but not much. I've only run across one other Hastings knife for sale, and the dealer wasn't knowledgeable about the knife.

I know that Don passed away in '86, and was a member of the Knifemakers Guild, but other than that, I'm at a loss for information concerning this maker and his knives.

Could any of you RKI's here help an old bass playing knife collector out and pass along some information about this maker and his fine knives?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Guys,

Don Hastings was more known for his association with the American Blade Smith Society. Although he may have been a Guild Member as well. He died from Cancer in 1986. At the time he was living in Texas.

Dwayne Parrish was working with Don when Don passed away. He continued his work under the Hastings/Parrish name. So I suspect what you have is a Parrish and not a Hastings.

You might want to contact the ABS (www.americanbladesmith.com) and see if they have a address on Parrish. He is not listed in Knives 2000. The last address I have on him is:

Dwayne Parrish
PO Box 181
Palastine TX 75801

It's just as well you didn't describe the knife or ask for an estimated value.

As such we cannot help you here with a dollar value on the knife.

As you can see the "buck" stops here (since we can't discuss money any further).

Blues can I use "buck" or is that considered commerce as well? :D

Well, Les, I just don't know what to say, let me ponder over it for a day or two. (Really, I am just bowled over by your acerbic wit. )

In any case, feel free to email the requesting party to share your beneficence while we mere mortals toil over these troubling questions. ;)

The late Don Hastings is a founding member of the American Bladesmith Society. He was extremely influencial in many of todays old school Master Smiths. Don was cutting rope, chopping 2x4's and bending blades long before it was cool;)

I suspected that my knife was made after Don's death, but wasn't sure of who the Parrish was in relation to Hastings. I'll research further, and whatever info. I turn up will be posted here in this thread for future reference and use.

Les,

Thank you for the clues, and I wasn't looking for any "value" info. - I paid an amount for the knife that I'm happy with. I really don't purchase knives (or guitars, basses, or firearms for that matter) with the idea that profit is in the future. I purchase items that I'm interested in for their intrinsic value as tools - maybe a handmade or older tool, but they're still tools to me. Even if it's one I don't use everyday :^)

Thanks again guys, you're the greatest.

Blues,

Buddy, little touchy aren't we.

You are correct I just could have emailed him directly. However, I thought one of the objectives of this forum was to educate and inform it's membership. Is it not?

As for the questions...you take as much time as you need.

I have to say I did find it odd that you felt it necessary to "belabor" the point you were trying to make.

TCAT,

You are welcome.

I know you weren't looking for a "value".

I was just having some fun with our "Super Moderator"!
