who can help me to find out details for the hatamoto by coldsteel? is it a custom knife made from japan? is its blade (san mai) as sharp as coldsteel says? please help me.

i just bought a cold steel tanto 5" voyager with the plain blade.

i tossed the paper receipt in the air that came with it and it cut(chopped) it cleanly in half.

if the hatamoto is sharper than that, lookout!

I haven't played with one in real life. With that in mind, I'll tell you what I do know.

It's had some minor and some more significant fit and finish problems from our reviewers. Apparently, it's larger than it looks. Most reviewers seem to feel that it's overpriced.

While CS seems to advertise it as custom-level, it's definingly not a custom, but in fairness, it's not like you're paying 500 for it either. I recommend a Ti Bump, Benchmade Gravitator, Morpho, 960...if you're looking for the customesque look or feel at an affordable price.

Les Voorhies does impressive custom work for about the same price--and his stuff really is custom.

one thing about the hatamoto that most people don't realize is how wide the blade is. it is as wide as a thick thumb or 2 fingers.

because of that, yes, the handle is wide as well. so if you have small hands, it may feel awkward to carry/use.

i just got done playing with my new tanto some more. held up some junk mail and it cut it clean in half. no tearing what so ever. clean as a razorblade slice. i am so amazed.

the handle/locking mechanism is probably one beautiful piece of work. but, is it worth $220. that is the least expensive i have found it on ebay, with shipping.

Are you telling me the spine of this knife is much thicker than my WW2 Khukuri? That's nuts. That explains the 7 oz...

Cold Steel knives are VERY sharp. I believe the hatamoto is one of their new "premium" folders that are made in limited quantities. I know a few folks who've had some of the other "premium" folders on back-order for months.

They are not mass-produced.

Cold Steel's knives are overpriced in my opinion. If you want sharp go with a Spyderco or Dozier.

I've always thought it was a very nice looking knife. However, I'll put my Al Mar SERE 2000 up against it any day and for $100 less. People have mentioned how heavy the Hatamoto is but it's only 1 ounce more the the SERE. I'd still like to add that even though high priced, I'm sure it's a very nice knife and you would enjoy it if you are a "tanto guy".

Good luck
