Hatchet and Splitter ID - Woodings?

Finally made it out to the flea market this morning. I picked up two but I don't know much about 'em.

First one is a small hatchet. There's no markings on it except for the remnants of an paper label. It looks as if it had red paint originally. It's in good condition though.

Second one is possibly a Wooding's - the handle is in great shape but I'm not sure on the head. It looks like it was painted green - I don't know if that's something original or not. The top is stamped US and there is an X (or a + I guess) next to the stamp. Looks like it had a label on it too but it's far gone.

I snagged both for about 5 bucks - Even if they aren't rusty gold, I'll clean 'em up a bit and use them!

As I was walking through the market, I was wondering if anyone had ever encountered a "mis-match" - Where the handle might indicate a nice axe but the head is from a different maker or is of lower quality than the handle would indicate. I saw a couple of axe's that had older looking handles but the heads were identical to a brand sold in a local Meijer - "Truper". I worked on one a while back for a friend and the steel was pretty soft.

Anyways, pics...

Any ideas on these two?

Thanks cooperhill. That looks really similar!

I can't seem to find anything similar. There's a harbor freight about a block down from the flea market I was at - I saw a couple axes from there at the flea market. The one I have looks similar to what they sell http://www.harborfreight.com/axe-with-hickory-handle-65729.html but I know that most of what the they carry has a resin/glue on the top of handle along with a couple other differences.

I started sharpening the little hatchet up and holy cow is the edge ever hard!

I like the hatchet with its full unclipped fawn's foot. That's the most comfortable grip for me. And if it's good hard steel then there's a chance that it's a True Temper or equal. In any case it's head and shoulders above anything you'll find at Harbor Freight (though I'll confess to shopping there myself on occasion).

The wide bit on the second one will serve nicely as a softwood feller. And it's likely at least a 3-1/2 or 4 pounder which will do well as a splitter.

Dontcha just love flea markets?

To be honest, I'm pretty sure the little hatchet was laughing at me (and probably still is). I spent quite a while filing and still didn't remove all the small nicks in the edge. It's plenty sharp now but holy crap. I've sharpened out some pretty big chips...this one was quite good in comparison to some and it STILL took forever.
