Hatchet for camping (week long trips)

I would check out the craftsmen hatchet at sears. They are around $15, and have a good steel and I believe Hickory handle, but they do need a lot of work on the edge, it couldnt cut a wedge of cheese with the factory edge.

'depends upon where you are and how light ya step, brother.

if it looks like it will be a really memorable trip, always go with quality.

The little mouse hatchets from Gransfors Bruks are winners IMHO, because they are small enough to go under your arm, and very light. - a little technique with some wood wedges and perhaps fire can get you where you need to be on big stuff, if so desired.

they are not the cheapest tools, but they are so fine, i'd just kick a painting off the wall in your den and look at them on bad days, remembering the happy times that you spent with it.

that's what i do with my beat up hawks.

Very few hatchets come with any kind of edge on them, so get a file and be prepared to do some reprofiling!

I don't claim to be an expert, but these are some of the choppers I've been using...

I can say that from everything that I have used, the little Gerber/Fiskars hatchet is by far the lightest and easiest to carry, sharpens up to a razor edge easily, and still manages to out whittle the others, and chops as well as most of the larger tools.
