Well, I've been trying to pick out an ax/hatchet and can't make up my mind. I was leaning toward the Gransfors Bruks but have read that you can't hammer with it. So, now I'm thinking about the K5 tactical or a trail hawk. Does anyone have experience with the k5? Also, are there any leather or kydex sheaths for the trail hawk?

Sorry about the multiple posts. My computer was locking up and it didn't look like it posted at first.

Why couldn't you hammer with it, they all look like they have a poll. I plan on getting a wetterlings soon, a bit rougher than a Granfors, but a lot cheaper and with some work, can be made almost as nice.

I assume it has to do with the steel. GB recommends not hammering much more than a tent stake.

It may not be what you want but there is what is called a "rigger's axe / hatchet. They are about 16 iches long but with a hammer poll if pounding / hammering is a need, Estwing makes one, you may check at your hardware or lumberyard to see if this is what you may need. Pat

Well, I ended up finding an old Cabela's gift card with $43 on it. So, I ordered the 16" Estwing Camper's Ax from them. Should have it in 6 days.

Years ago I was taught not to do heavy hammering with a single bit axe or hatchet because it would deform the eye.

The Estwing has no eye to deform, though the poll is not hardened for driving nails.

The rig-axe is designed for house framing, with a tempered hammer head. Pound all you want with one of those.

Yes! I've made synthetics for the trail hawk.

Would the axe head loosen up-that is driven out of the synthetic handle's moulded socket by being used as a hammer(only generally camping/outdoor tasks such as tent pegs and general wood work around camp site-am concerned about that very sharp axe head flying at me with force.Thanks.

You can kill a building with a K5. If you can find one used - apparently it's a loser's game to order one from the maker. But they are quite heavy.
