Hatchet Hardness?

Hatchet - D2 ?? Hatchets need toughness not hardness .Something not more than about 55 HRc would work well.

Customer specs, it's not really a hatchet, but closer to one than anything else.

I was thinking the same thing about 53-55 , but then found the Crucible Datasheet.

Maximum Charpy is at 60RC.

Should I shoot for maximum charpy, or still go to 55ish?

55-ish; a hard cutting edge on a hatchet will chip out pretty easily if you use a hatchet like a hatchet. All it takes is a knot in the wood or missing and hitting a rock. I'd even say you could go lower, like 50-52 ish. A hatchet is designed to split wood, it doesn't need all that hardness. Plus a softer edge means it will be easier to field sharpen.

It ended up 55-56.

Its a blade for a gator hunt next week, so I made the handle look like my vision of gator skin.

cool hatchet! I'd tend to trust the charts though, because I think D-2 is quite prone to TME
