Hatchet Head with unusual pattern forged into body.

I have a Hatchet Head with a very unusual pattern forged into the body (see pic in attached link).

No maker marks. Has anyone else ever seen one like this? If so, please share info! Thank you!

I believe that's a recent modification of an old head. The pattern was made by hollow grinding with the contact wheel on a belt grinder.

That makes sense! But they definitely would have had to use some type of milling vise or CNC, as the design is precise all the way around. I'm going to wire brush it and see how consistent the grinding marks are, as well. I'll post a pic after it's cleaned up.

It's usually more that you start the groove in one spot so the wheel tracks into it, then walk it across.

It's a modern head, made that way, I think from Europe.

Yeah sure looks like it! The general styling of the head is vaguely Russian so the Ukrainian provenance tracks.
