This is a recent purchase, an antique store find that included a green canvas sheath. The handle was so dry and head so loose that I was able to slip it off by hand and remove the old wedge with my fingers. I re-wedged and oiled and it looks awesome. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before and can ID it. There are no markings, but it looks European to me based on the profile. The handle is 13" long and the whole shebang weighs 22 ounces. I was thinking of keeping this one and using it to start playing with hatchet carving. The profile looks right for this. Anyway, if anyone knows what I have here i would be grateful to know.

Profile looks fairly European to me, the mark probably wore off. might be an import axe?

I don't see even the hint of an old mark anywhere, and the pebbly surface looks original to me. Perhaps that feature may aid with an ID if there were makers or models that had this.

The "pebbley" appearance looks like it was cast, but I may be wrong.
Sorry, no help...

I recently came across two hatchets at a place here that looked just like this one. Pebbly surface and pattern were the same but on one the edge was raised about an 1/8" if that makes sense - the factory edge/bevel was thicker than the bit behind it up the cheeks. The pebbly surface was present behind the bevel leading me to think that it was designed that way. This probably isn't helpful to identifying the origin of the hatchet unless someone has seen something like that before. Your wedging looks good though, JB.

I see "Quality Control" is lurking there behind your heater.

Still hoping for an ID, but I'll try it out. Its done but for a razor edge.

I feel like its some kind of military surplus, but not USA. I have no evidence but a feeling. It had faint green paint. I love the weight and gripped just below the head it feels perfect. I know what you mean about looking cast, but it also has some of those drop forged ridges. I'll report on the steel.

No idea what it is but I have a similar one that I picked up recently. Its 1 lbs 13 oz I believe with a 2" * .5" eye (boys axe sized). Its the one just below the boys axe in this picture.

Its hard to see with the 19" handle sitting on top, but it has a similar shape, profile, and that textured pattern. Mine came with black paint that was obviously old and coming off on its own. I can get a better picture if you would like, I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do.

NO pic because it was stolen long before I found BF, but I had a 13" hatchet almost identical to the OPs that was "Army Surplus", w/the standard, bent metal military hook on the sheath. Green canvas sheath, handle and head were OD green. The head had the same "pebbly" surface. I got it in 1967 at the local surplus store.

There was no stamps on the head or handle, but the sheath had a small red on white "Made in Japan" label. Worked well until the south end of a northbound mule broke into my storage shed and stole it, along with a whole lot of other camping equipment.
