What's up everyone? I was on the job site today clearing land and rewiring some landscape lighting. Kinda of where the story started was me felling 2 oaks by hand instead of with power saws. While I was working today the landowner (age 72) came out to talk to me and had a hatchet in her hand. I kinda kidded around about hiring her to come work but she brought the hatchet out to give me. She said it had belonged to her husband's father. Her husband passed about 6 years ago and he had the hatchet his whole life after his father gave it to him she explained. She must have known I have a growing collection of axes/hatchets and that I would take care of it.

Anyway it is a Pexto hatchet. I think it is rafting hatchet from the bit being offset to one side. I was wondering if someone might be able to give me an estimated time on when it was made. What was the original purpose of this hatchet? Also can someone sound off on some suggestions on how the best restoration ideas? What would be the proper way to maybe take the nails out of the handle and put a locust or black walnut wedge in the place of them. I didn't remove any of the rust as I wanted to keep it so it would show it's age. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated if any other pics are needed just say so and I'll post them asap

Also should I rehang this head? What are yalls thoughts? If so should I put it on a straight or curved handle. I couldn't find a lot out about Pexto previous to the most recent buy out on the interweb.

It looks like a hewing hatchet - single bevel, right-handed. The toe is bitten off a bit.

As far as rehanging, that is up to you but you could sharpen it and leave the toe a little thick but with a honed edge and use it to rough carve.

If you rehang it your are going to probably have to file out the eye where it is smashed over the tongue on the top.

Pexto made known quality tools but I don't know anything about their axes/hatchets.

Thanks for all the info @Agent_H I might just hit the handle with some BLO and put her up on the shelf as is for a trophy piece. I don't really do much carving our anything. Just a little whittling every now and then. I hate to hit pieces with a file that are approaching antique age. Not a problem though @Beachlogger Glad to share any of my stories or adventures. I was honored she gave the piece to me when she came out waking with it.

Do you think just BLO is the way to go with no touch ups or try to pull the nails and what looks to be screws out to try and get a black walnut wedge in there?

Rust is never a good thing and should be removed, you should take a wire cup in an angle grinder to remove the rust leaving the patina.
