I've searched in the usual ways to ID this hatchets maker. Most indicators make me believe made in china. I bought this in 1985 and it seems to be of good guality holding an edge well. It is marked 600 under head and DY on top.

600
DY

What country are you located in ?
It's possible that this was made in China, it looks much nicer than I'd expect but there's no reason an importer couldn't have payed more for this level of quality.

Looks like it's very possibly a Diamond Brand, which is a Chinese company that made really quite nice axes and hatchets. My family has a hatchet that looks very much like that one of similar vintage that has the remnants of a dark navy blue paper label on it still.

Aye, often forget to mention location. USA. Bought in Pennsylvania.

Thank you for the possibly Diamond brand. I will look into that.

That's certainly a possibility.
DIAMOND and DEER are / were 2 long standing Chinese tool manufacturers who tended to make tools under their own names and actually put out decent quality long before the massive plague of Chinese junk started flooding the country.
