I cleaned off some tools then lacquered them with two coats to help with the rust. When dry I could not really notice much difference so it didn't ugly them up. I also saw someone on the net using a portable drill holster for smaller hatchets and I grabbed one up, seems to work well enough. I need my hands free while metal detecting the bush. I might clip a Mora on the outside, not sure yet.

Interesting - never thought of using a drill holster. Here is the hatchet holster I made a while back:

I don't go on long hikes with a hatchet on my belt, but it works great for all those times when you need one handy, but don't want to keep having to put it down and pick it up again as you move around limbing, etc.

Nice leather work, and that's a great hatchet head.
I found it to be too heavy for that short handle and put a boy's axe haft on mine to great effect, along with a new leather cover (the factory one was pretty weenie).

Cool, looks like a good one. I am a cheap S.O.B. and I like inexpensive and practical when I can find it. I also have zero leather working skills\knowledge. I saw a guy using the holster on the web and this thing was $13.00 here, so it made sense to me. I just want to have my hands free when farting around out there. This may just be one of my semi functional impulsive experiments. You never know.

Same here, and your dog needs a haircut!

;)

This is a prototype of a top-loading kydex hatchet/tomahawk sheath I'm working on. It's basically just a loop that you drop the tool into, but with the added benefit of the awesome retention offered by kydex. Not super useful as a belt sheath, since it's a little hard to draw, but it's great for strapping to a pack since it would have to break the friction hold and defy gravity in order to fall out.

Seen plenty of foresters (the USFS type of forester) who would just put their hatchet in one of those drill/hammer belt loops (the metal ring kind).

No edge cover, just drop it in. Another funny fact, their hatches weren't ever sharp enough to cut, they just powered through. I couldn't stand it and had to carry my own chopping implement because I can't stand dull stuff.
