Couldn't think of a better way to spent the 4th than finishing up a couple of hatchets I modded towards trade axes. All hafts are Ash- middle one is finished by three day soak in BLO Turps on a head a friend modded. The others at a eight hour soak in rusty white vinegar sometimes called "Ebonizing" and a haft soaked in BLO Turps after a walnut stain.
Still have to put a finish edge on the heads and think I'm going to put a couple of coats of Tru oil on them all.

I'm liking the rusty vinegar tratment- kinda camo looking with a green tint. I have another haft in the vinegar now, want to see how dark it will get.
Have to thank boards like this for the inspiration and sharing of information.

Where did you get the handles? I assume you removed the hatchet handles and replaced them with more traditional hawk handles right?

Thanks guys,
The heads started out as Harbor Freight 1 1/4 lb hatchets on sale for $7.99. Annealed, cut down, re-drifted to accept hawk handles from Hawkins Knife making supply.
They weight 20 ozs- stained haft one has a sharpened lower beard.
I'm still working on scratch builts- these are just a learning experience.
