I'm new here and I thought I would post some pictures of a long handle hatchet I worked on yesterday. I put in a minimum $9.99 bid on ebay and ended up getting it. It is an old embossed axe so I figured quality steel but I really bid on it for the cool old half octogon/ half round handle. I was hoping I could save it.
Here is how it looked after just getting the loose rust off.

The handle is 16 inches with a 1 lb. 2oz. head. I got all the metal out with needle nose pliers. Then I sawed out slots where the nails were and glued side wedges in, then trimmed and sanded before adding the main wedge. Next I sanded out the gouges and rough spots and tried to maintain the bevels. I added filler in the deep holes and sanded. I just started using the sharpening stone on the edge and a coat of boiled linseed oil. I'm hoping to get the color of the bottom and top of the handle to match as I add more coats. We'll see. Still working on it.

That looks real good, nice coloring, sharpening, and haft job, especially with what you had to work with. Well done!

What Operator said. Really nice job!

I like to see people cleaning them up without zapping the history right out of them!

That's a nice handle. I'm glad you were able to save it. Great little hatchet all around.
