i made a vid today showing a hatchet vs a camp knife.

i think the video shows pretty well why i prefer a hatchet to a large knife, it can cut wood larger than 1-2", without too much effort...

the only drawback to the hatchet is that it doesn't slash brush as well as the large knife...luckily i don't have too much brush to slash when camping...;)

outstanding job, brother.

i think you'll find also that when you slab the sides of a tomahawk or hatchet, you hit your target very consistently, as with the large knife, but with the advantage of the damage that a hawk makes.

i sure do like the lines on that competition knife though, and there is definitely room for a great knife like that in my stable.

i really used to like knives like that a lot when i was going fast and ultralight for the day - i am not sure if i will use mine much though after i get the Sectionals developed - we'll have to see.

more importantly, great video and demonstration, brother!

I tend to agree with that sentiment. I have resisted large blades as a result, and stuck to 4-6 inch blades and a lightweight hawk or hatchet (currently its a FT Hawk and a Fiskars 14inch) I also feel like the hatchet provides more control personally.

I like to have both when in the wild...
For me that is a VTAC and a Glock Model 81 Field Knife...

siguy good job. What knife is that? I like em when they have a dropped edge like that.

Those little Fiskars are great as a light hatchet.

vec, thanks!

wildmike, it is the crowell/barker competition knife. a pretty good deal for the way the knife comes! i evened out the edge and sharpened it up, but the ergos are good and the general blade shape works well. the slightly trailing point is kinda cool too. i really like the distal taper and the tapered tang too, nice touches on a factory knife. this one is on loan from a forum friend..
