Folks,
a hatchet was offered for me by a friend. It's a Rat...he's keeping the Busse... I really like the feel of it, I'm just courious if there's any practical use of it?
Do you use yours?

thanks, Peter

I have a Gransfors Bruks mini hatchet, but don't really use it that much. It's a lot more fun to use a Busse to hack stuff up, and for the weight, I'd rather just have a large fixed blade. It has more uses.

I have a Swamp Rat Crash Axe. They are very cool. Haven't gotten a chance to use it yet but I've spoken to people who have and the consensus is that they are great.

If he's offering you a Paul's Ratchet, it's a very light hatchet. I use mine in the garden, and normally store it as a break-out tool in my car. If you have something large to chop through it would take forever as they aren't very big or heavy.

+1, BM's, SH's etc... Although a crash axe in the trunk would be handy. I don't have any Busse family axes.

Gransfors Bruks Hunter Axe : chop wood like butter.

An INFI tomahawk would be so nice! Like the strider, but without the stupid holes :

I also have a Swamp Rat Crash Axe (first Busse family purchase) I like it a lot!
The only problem I have found with it is the lack of a swell near the bottom of the handle. I feel like I am using to tight of a grip and my hand gets fatigued.

I do love the way it punches thru sheet metal!!!

I agree with Coupchoux, I have a Gransfors axe I keep in my truck, it DOES cut like butter. I had one Paul's Hatchet, I couldn't believe how small it was when I got it, I sold it soon after. I also have a SR Crash axe, it is O.K. for small stuff, but doesn't have the weight to do very heavy chopping (which I'm sure it wasn't intended to do). For now, it seem the Gransfors line is about the best for the money. :D

Here is a picture of a couple of Graham brothers axes, they are 3/8" thick, so they are stout!!!

Don't have an infi hatchet of axe sadly but I do partner up my Mistresses with a Gransfors Small Forest Axe. The ladies love hanging out and competing against the big Swede.

The axe is great but if I had to choose only one to take into the woods then i'll stick to my mistresses. Problem is which one, i've got a CGFBM, FFBM and a NMFBM. It's a tough choice but as I was told by my teachers at school it's nice to have choices.

Now having a Busse axe of this size then that would be interesting.

My Busse axe sure does it for me! You guys should try one, you'll like it. What? They don't make them anymore? Well some day maybe they will again. Then there will be another 3 out there somewhere. Still the holly grail of the Busse line.

Bragger! I thought it just lived in the safe though???

I regularly use an Estwing hatchet. It's admittedly not the best hatchet out there, but for the price it is tough to beat. Hatchets should be as sharp as knives, and sharp hatchets are bad news in the wrong hands.

I don't have a good chopper fixed blade - yet. It's on order.

A few weeks ago I cut up three retired climbing ropes with the hatchet. Chopping through tough rope is far easier than shearing I discovered.

I have a pair of Ratchets, but they are staged in the vehicles as extraction tools. They are far too light and short handled (a la the Paul's Hatchet) to get a good swing on.

randucci...are those Graham axes yours? I did the handle material for the one on the left and was looking for a update on it.

Yes, they are both mine and "yes" it is your Micarta on the far left one, I got it at Blade a couple of years ago. What kind of "Update" were you looking for? I haven't used it, so I can't say anything about the Micarta's durablity.

:D

Just wanted to make sure it held it finish well. Not worried about how it is holding up durability wise. Got some of the first pieces I made on some old beaters that I use so not worried about it holding up, they just still have the same bad finish I put on them back when I made them. Those where the first two pieces that I sold to anyone that went on those hawks and the first to get a pro knife maker finish and be sold. Just want to make sure they still look good! Thanks hope you have been happy. The Graham brothers are great guys and I love those hawks. Wanted to add sorry for the thread hijack. Just did not know what happened to those hawks and got excited!
