hatchets

Hmmm... The link goes to the general site, and not to a hatchet. If you're referring to the Mastercraft Hatchet with the fiberglass handle for $19.99, then sure, that'll work for splitting wood. It'll probably work better than a knife, but not better than a larger axe or a maul. It depends how much wood you want to split, how often, and how big the chunks of wood are. And how much work you want to do. In controlled situations, I've split wood with my Better BK3 (lots!), my 14" Gerber camp axe, my about 12" Marble's pocket axe, and so on. They'll all work. I've used a baton with all of those, too.

There are a gazillion hatchets on the market. If you like that one, then by all means, try it out. Have fun and be careful!

As with Hikeba.... the link didn't work to well. Goes to a general site, not a specific hatchet. For me... you can't go wrong with a GB SFA. I have one ( thats the only reason I would endorse it) and it is fantastic. Great balance, splitting (it's only semi weak point) and general "woodcraft" ability. Not cheap... but IMHO money well spent. Look here:http://www.sagecreekoutfitters.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=AX

That one looks like the standard type hachet you would find in any sporting goods or campers store. You can pick them up at walmart for less than $10.
they're ok for occasional duty, but the handle is hollow and will break. You might want to throw that into your toolbox, go for something a little better, but you souldn't have to spend over $50 to get a good chopper.

I like the campers axe. That's one I would break my $50 rule on.

I'd go with a Fishers ax Canadian Tire sells, on sale on the East Coast now.

Not a fine ax, but better than most they sell with maybe the exception of the more expensive Estwing.

You might also consider a Wetterling - a bit cheaper than Granfors Bruks but good quality. If you can afford it, you're usually always better off buying better quality - especially when it comes to tools.

I have the Wetterling Forest Axe and it's a great axe for the price:

Looks like a good hachet for the money. How well does the head stay on the handle? I've had a few fly off in mid swing. That'll whop a knot on your head.

I don't have the hatchet - just the axe. Never had a problem with it. They're quality tools - check out their website: http://www.wetterlings.com/

The best splitting hatchet I have used is the Roselli. For a low budget tool...I can go to any flea market in PA farm country and pick up a quality hatchet for $5. With some time with a file and stone and maybe a handle wedge I can be up and running for next to nuthin'.
