Have an old Buck Hatchet and all it has on the Handle is Buck and under the name Buck it has USA ! Anyway to tell how old this is.? Black Handle and all steel from handle to the blade. I know I have had it at least 20 plus years but don't remember when I got it. Anybody got any ideas.? Thanks.

Glad, That sounds like the model 106 Buck hatchet . The 2 liners Buck stamped between 1968- 71, blade is 440C . Those are hard to come by . Be glad you have it . DM

There are no other markings on this and when I got it in the store they did not give me the box or anything - so I had nothing to go by. I just know that I have had it a long time just like the ones I have for sale in the Buck sale section. I have a guy that wants to buy the Hatchet but we don't know what it is worth - will try and get pictures in here later when I get my Camera back. Thanks. Jack

Does say 106 on the Leather part that covers Hatchet part - never even noticed that.! Does anybody know what they sell for if never been used and kept in a Safe all these years.??? Mint condition.!

In the attached two pics, you can see that there are two different styles of 106 hatchets marked BUCK USA.

Which style do you have? and if you have the one with the phenolic handle and the aluminum pommel, on which side of the hatchet does the BUCK USA appear?

Nice photos Tele.. Did the black phenolic handle w/ hard fiber spacers come first ? DM

Dave:

The Phenolics started the 106 line. The first ones were in 1965 as far as I know and had BUCK on the left side Face of the Hatchet. Next came BUCK on the right side near the guard; then BUCK* on the right side near the guard in 1967. BUCK USA came, of course, in 1968. From that point on with the phenolics you have to look at the handle length and the sheath clasp or snap until the micarta slab sides arrived in 1969.

CAVEAT: this is an unauthorized biography and subject to change.;););)

I would be fascinated to see a 1965 BUCK stamped on the face of the hatchet. All the rest of the phenolics and Micartas (including the redhead) are familiar to me.

This one is like the one on the left..! New and never been used though with a Leather Sheath and Stamped 106 on Sheath and just Buck with small usa under Buck. ! Does that help at all for the year.!?? (I am going to put it up for sale tonight though but I still don't know what kind of price to put on it so I will be playing it by ear or by what I have heard it should go for) Been with me a long time but has been asleep in Safe all these years.! Poor thing. LOL Thx. Jack

Assuming that the slabs are black,(and not Dark Maroon) your hatchet is 1970-1973?. Price range $110 to, on a good day, $150-160.

They are Black and Hatchet is in mint condition, like I said - I got it and put it in one of my Safes and all that has been done to it is moved to make room for other stuff and it is getting crowded so some things have to go. As far as price I was thinking of $125 - or do you all think that is to far out of line.?? I really don't want to give it away but then I don't want to stick anybody either. Guess I could Donate it to SMKW's up in Sevierville,Tn. to put in there Museum if they don't have one. Never thought of that. Have to give this some thought and sleep on it. Appreciate everybody's input and help on this blade. Thanks. Jack

Talked with x-wife this morning and she said she got the Hatchet in 1970 for my Birthday (heck I can't even remember what happened last week) and said at same time bought me 2 Big Sheath Knives to go with it and they were Buck Knives also.! Don't even remember them - boy it is hxxl when you get old.! LOL Said if I donated that would be nice but if I sold she wanted half {"women"} and we would talk about it. Oh yeah - you know I am going to do that.! LOL Still don't know what to do though - donate or sell.! What would you Guy's do.??? Donate - Sell..!!

Well SMKW's did not need the Hatchet so I guess it will put it up for sale on Bucks for sale. Thanks for the info though guys. Jack
