Hate the new Charge Tti sheath

Hey guys.

Been around for a while, but usually keep pretty quiet. I'm still a little new to this knife/gear/EDC stuff, even though I've always been Interested in cool gadgets and tools. I guess now I'm just putting a name to the addiction. So anyway, here's the deal.

I just picked up a Leatherman Charge Tti and so far I'm fairly impressed. I say fairly because I have two problems with it. First of all, the sheath. Its their new design that's half leather and half nylon. I hate it. Its very bulky and obtrusive and the leather flap sticks up WAY too far over the tool. Perhaps it works for some, but I'd rather have a sleeker look if I did choose to carry it that way. Second, the charge itself seems to be very stiff. Perhaps its simply because its still new and needs to break in, but it still feels like maybe its going to stay that way.

So here are my questions.

1. I'd like to know if anyone knows of any good sheaths that would fit the Charge that would be sleek and not too bulky, and carry vertical or horizontal? Leather or nylon is fine, but prefer nylon. Maybe a Maxpedition or Condor like system. And yes, I know I can get one from leatherman, I'm just looking for other possible options.

2. Should it be so stiff out of the box? What kind of lube would she like? I've seen people open these things one handed like a balisong. Have they loosened off the screws to get that result? If so, where would I get the bits to fit the screws?

Thanks guys, I'll probably post a mini review based on my own personal accounts and use soon after I've had a chance to use it as more than just a toy while I'm watching TV (you know you all do it).

The nylon and leather sheath blows chunks, I hate it. Get the all Nylon Leatherman one that has been around for years, it is much superior. Get some good lube like Mil Tec 1 or Break Free or RIG +P or something on that order, put it on the pivot areas, and work it open and close about 100 times. If that doesn't do it for you, then run to your local ACE hardware or similar and get 6 point security Torx bits. Most large hardware stores sell them and you'll need two and perhaps a little heat from a heat gun or propane torch to loosen up the Torx screws that hold your Leatherman together. Don't overdo it, get it hot enough to burn you, but no more than that. Get some blue loc tite too and apply to the threads so once you tighten them to your liking they will stay put. That's my 2 cents worth, after owning bunch of the Charges and Waves.

I had my TTi for a over a year and had to get the torx bits last week end that did the trick. They are not reg ones ,.they as mentioned are the security ones. The half nylon half leather was made to hold the strip of bits that comes with the tool. They get stored behind the inside nylon, the tool goes in front of that. Other than i don't like black sheaths it works as designed.

Of several available, the one I like best is still the nylon/elastic sheath Leatherman supplies. It can be worn horizontal or vertical, and just about any accessory you really need can be packed with your Charge. It also costs less than the better aftermarket alternatives.

Almost all my several Leathermen, different models including a TTi, started out stiffer than I'd like, but all came around to just right after several days of simply working them. Like you, I thought a couple would remain too stiff, but even they learned to behave. Perhaps you should watch TV a little more, work the implements another week before considering loosening the pivots.

After lots of use, they get loose enough to do the balisong flip, which is fun only if the inside handle implements don't come out to play. A few times I almost got cut that way. Be careful what you wish for.

Thanks for the tips guys! I think I'm leaning more towards the leatherman nylon sheath. Its inexpensive and seems to have everything I'm looking for. I with I had not purchased it the way I did. This would have all been avoided had the ebay seller simply answered the email I had sent requesting the nylon sheath. Instead, I got a reply two days after the charge had shipped. Guess I leaned a lesson there too. As for the stiffness, its getting there. I need to get some decent lube for the pivots though. All in all, I can't wait to get the chance to just wail on this thing. It feels so damn solid. Lol, I've never looked forward to putting a tool through its paces so much. I hope I'm not alone there either.

I hear you, I don't like the sheath either. as a matter of fact, I just ordered the nylon one with the molle attachment I also have for my wave.

Cant you find any old stores that are still selling the older leather sheath? That was a pretty decent sheath if you ask me.

EDIT: I just noticed you were looking for non-LM sheaths.

I got a Maxpedition tube sheath that fits the Wave/Charge like a glove. That might be an option. Here you can see it mounted to me backpack, with a Surefire 6P in it.

I agree 100%...I bought one of those leather/nylon "premium" LM sheaths for my (excellent) Wave, and I'm not at-all pleased with it. The all nylon LM sheath is the sheath to have...(Even the all-leather sheath is alot better than that leather/nylon sheath.).

What is it about that leather/nylon sheath that I am so set against? It's the very thin piece of leather that is in used for the top belt-loop...I don't think it would take much use before it wore out and tore in-two.
