I'm catching it too. I always thought it was just over a pig, and that they were just being ridiculous. But they way they portray the Hatfields, they deserved what they got, at least so far, we'll have to see...

I watched it last nite, gonna record it tonight as i gotta go haul up our lobster traps as the season is about over, gonna be painfull with stitches in my hand but what ya gonna do.

My wife spent part of her childhood in that area of Kentucky (outside of Martin) and knew some McCoys. It's quite an adventure when my Yankee family visits her family down there. Believe me...it's a different world....still.
Great show!

I too enjoyed the first part of this mini series. I had heard of the Hatfields and McCoys before but never knew the real story behind the feud. Looking forward to watching the second part tonight!

I'm going to have to retract my last statement, the McCoy's started a feud and continued to instigate and get their a$$*$ kicked.

I suspect that both families end up with their tails kicked and suffer great losses by the time the feud ends.

The beginning, of course, was not really just about a pig.......the root cause of the feud was much earlier when Anse Hatfield went deserter from the Civil War and his good friend Randall McCoy stayed and fought and went to a prisoner of war camp--and could never forgive Anse.

The animosity between these two men was the initial spark, but the feud fed on itself and it really shows that humans are tribal creatures. We (except for a few loners and hermits) have a deep need to belong to a group of like-minded individuals. A tribe brings security and fellowship. And tribes, unfortunately, usually fight other tribes for territory and hegemony.

So it goes.

The Hatfields and McCoys are a fascinating study in the warfare of rival gangs.

Also.......the producers did a fine job of making it authentic in every way possible.

I have been watching it the last two nights. I knew the general story, but now know a good bit more. I am ready for the last one tonight.

I have been watching it too! I hate to say it, this story reminds me a little of my family, my Mom is from the Mountains of North Carolina and My Dad was from a farm in East Tennessee, oh the stories I could tell.

I read on Foxnews that the mini series has set a record as having the largest audiance on basic cable for any program.

I didn't bother watching, as I actually happen to have known a LOT about it prior to all the current buzz over the series. I'm not saying I suspected the series would "get it wrong", and indeed my understanding is that it was done very well. My problem is that I've always regarded it as a primary example of incredible stupidity breeding more of the same; people with a truly prodigious amount of self-righteousness and a laughable lack of sense. As such, I figured I would have a hard time getting into it, as I'd be rooting for (and invested in) pretty much nobody. I'm not blanketly stating that this makes it uninteresting--based on the ratings and the response here I'd say many find it very interesting--just uninteresting to me. I'm happy it's doing so well, actually, just for the sake of Bill Paxton getting to be part of a big entertainment draw again, as he'd kind of faded in recent years and I've always rather liked him.

Paxton does well, as do most of the other talented people involved.......Costner, of course, is great.

But my special favorite is Tom Beringer as the evil Jim Vance.......he really nails it.

Tom Berringer is another under-used actor---deserved star turns that he never got; not that it's an uncommon reality. I've always enjoyed Kostner: he's not the most versatile actor but he always seems like he believes in the material and is never phoning it in. For that matter, Sean Connery's range wasn't remarkable, and he's probably my favorite actor of all time.
