Hats from the heyday

Curious where one might find a hat circa the heyday of camping vis a vis Dan Beard and others in the time period of 1890 - 1930s. I'm trying to assemble some period correct attire for an upcoming nostalgia camp out. I see old photos of modified campaign hats - forest service hats also know as a Montana Peak. There are others with a single crease in the middle. Most brims are either slightly rolled or just bent from daily use.

I'd like to find a hat similar to what folks wore back in the day. Any suggestions? Where could I locate such a hat? I've searched junk shops and antique stores to no avail.

There are numerous hat concerns that'll be happy to make any style you want.
For quality vs costume, figure on a minimum of $200.

Google hatmakers.

A good 'hatter' can shape a hat however you wish. They can shorten the brim and crease anyway you want...

A 1950's Norm Thompson Shakari Safari in beaver felt by Resistol. As said, a good hatter can shape a good hat any way you wish. I found this one on eBay some time back. For an authentic shape, survey outdoor magazines from your era of interest.

If you can find a wide brimmed hat, you can shape it yourself. Just push out the crown till it's bowl shaped, spray the hat with water, and shape to whatever style you want. Google "hat bashing" for better instructions, it really is pretty easy.

There is a Saddle and Hat maker about 46 minutes south of me in Salina. Look up Burns Saddlery.

You may find what you are looking for at a Tack and Feed/Western wear shop. I get my Felt hats from the local tach and feed place or some of the Locally owned Camping shops. Even some of the bigger sporting goods shops like Cabela's or Sportsmans Warehouse may have what you are looking for.

Recently I bought a Western Style Felt hat from the local tach and feed shop. It's a Black Creek Brand which is made by H&M Hat company out of PA. I just looked over their online catalog and saw mostly Western/Cowboy style hats, but it still may be worth a look for you. My Black Creek Fedora was only $20 on sale a few weeks ago. :)

How about some Filson Hat pics...

Google Stratton & Miller for modern trooper-style campaign hats of decent quality.

Ok guys I've narrowed my hat down to this one which I believe reflects a circa 1895-1920's hat worn by guys camping during that Golden time period. What think?

I think it looks good. You can scotchguard it for waterproofing. You might consider a chin strap for windy conditions. I think an all cotton hat with similar proportions would be period correct also and maybe a little cooler in the summer.
