Picked up the little 10.5" khuk he made, the walnut handled one with the standard scabbard in last Friday's DOTD. What a delightful little khukuri! It's somewhere between a large Bilton and a 12" khuk for size (see pic, it's the one in the middle), very comfortable, and very nicely made. Been looking for a khuk this size/configuration ever since Berkley showed me his Chesapeake (sic) Knife Club Khukuri, perfect size khuk for around the house or taking an unobtrusive walk in the woods. The mirror polished blade is sharp as any villager I've handled, and the beautiful hill walnut handle, with it's white metal fittings, is something to see. The karda and chakma are nicely handled in matching wood, and when I tested their blades, I was absolutely tickled. The karda will cut small shavings from a six penny nail without edge deformation, and the chakma's so hard it cheerfully burnished the edges of a couple of my homemade file knives. Don't want to scratch it up banging it against a piece of flint, got plenty of my handforged firesteels laying around if I need to light a fire, but I've no doubt it would throw a hot spark.

Looking this rig over closely, it's plain to see that every aspect of it's making, from the khuk, to the accessories, to the scabbard, was accomplished by the hands of one man, Sergeant Khadka. Well done, very well done, good sergeant. :D :)

The Sargent is Ram's father, yes?

How's Ram doing these days? Anyone know?

Ram's doing ok. He's probably taking exams right now. He is pretty lonely though, it's been about 3 years since he has been back home to Nepal. He recently talked to his dad on the phone for the first time since he left Nepal to go to medical school.

I just posted a thread in the Cantina with some info for the new members. (I swear I did it before I read this thread. :o ) Ram's new semester starts January 25th, and his tuition is about $2000.

Edit: Oops, sorry about the thread drift. Sarge, I still (and will always) have that AK that the Sgt. made that you sent me. Outstanding craftsmanship. Since then I've acquired several of his biltons from kagas katne size up to a 10". They are all just superb. He made 3 Chiruwa AKs and sent them to me. I sold them in the classifieds and sent the money to Ram. They were top notch! Here's a picture of them.

Steve, thread drift? You're kidding right? If there are any folks on this forum who aren't familiar with the story of Sgt. Khadka and his son Ram, they need to hear it. Harder to know who to be prouder of, father or son, both heroes in my book.

I haven't had a chance at one of those Sgt Khadka AK's yet. I'll spring on one if I see it, you bet. Thats one sweet knife Sarge. Love it.

a Bilton that I got from Steve in the Ram fundraiser and the 11.5"/10oz. one from 12/07 (or was it12/08?). Fit and finish on both are outstanding. The engraving on the scarbards is stunning. I feel like a rich man when I hold them. Hats of to the good Sgt. and his son. The world needs more men like that.

Hear! Hear! I also have a few of the good Sergeant's khukuris. One nice little one IIRC and a couple of villagers in the 17" range. I love 'em all but I'm especially fond of Sgt. Khadka's village models. The only knives I've ever gotten from HI I didn't have to sharpen before use even a little bit! :D

The sergeant does some of the cleanest allaround work I've seen: blade, handle, and scabbard.

-Sarge, on the sergeant

A side-by-side comparison of the CBKCC and one of the sergeant's fancy ones from an earlier Ram fundraiser [see Steve Ferguson's post in the Cantina and click on the link]. The sergeant's work is just a little bit cleaner, IMHO.

Wow  Thanks Berk, great pic, yup that's the one I remembered. Seeing it stem to stern alongside of one of Sgt. Khadka's khuks, tells me my comparison of the two, regarding size and shape, was more accurate than speculative. Reassuring to know the old memory banks are still functioning properly as one gets olde...., uh, less young.
