I'm the type of person that likes to give credit where credit is due so here it goes... (it's late and I typed this on my phone, please excuse any spelling or typing errors)

Since I was a kid I've always been one of the guys who has a knife with him nearly all the time. It's not for show or for looks, it's because they are an extreemly useful and versitle tool. It wasn't until recently that I began actually researching what makes a good blade and so on.

For the past couple years I've been strictly carrying fixed blades and completely distrusted folders. I liked the safety & security of no locking mechanism. When I started reading around on the forums and watching YouTube reviews, I saw Spyderco getting a lot of buzz. At first I found myself wondering how so many people could like such ugly knives, however the more I watched, the more I started to change my opinion.

After much contemplation I looked at my computer screen (Spyderco.com) and said, "I'll give you folding bastards one more chance."

Here I am, one short week later and I'm holding my first Spyderco, a Manix 2, and all I can say is, "Wow". This is the most solid folder I've ever held or seen in person. So glad I went with the Manix, it makes the transition back to folders too easy. One of the reasons I loved fixed blades is that "tank" feeling you get when using it and the Manix 2 is exactly that but in a much lighter and easy to carry package.

I haven't had the knife long enough to write a review but there will be one coming once I've had time to use it.

So hats off to the folks at Spyderco and I look forward to putting the Manix to work.

Josh

glad they can inspire!
I started off buying a few Kershaws..ie Leek, Chive, and Ener-g which are awesome and then I got a spyderco..my next 5 knives were spyderco haha

While the Manix 2 is a very strong folder, there is still no substitute for a good fixed blade. Although folders are easier to carry.

Josh, welcome to the Spyder, I can pretty much guarantee, this will be your first, of many. ;) Lets see, whats next? The Military then a Para Milli, and oh you must have a Stretch, any flavour is fine. The thing is, Spyderco's are like opening a bag of potato chips, one chip leads too, another then another, you must have more! :p good luck bro.

Josh,

I'm in the same boat. Carried a knife since first grade, I'm 44 now. I've owned a Police model for many years, but like you have just started researching what makes a great knife, great. I've really enjoyed the researching as well as talking to knowledgeable people about the different steels, blade grinds, scale and handle materials and so on.
The Manix looks bad ass and rock solid. I recently recieved an Endura 4 G10 and damn, what a great knife.

I too am a lover of the fixed blade. The folders are just so convenient and the Spydercos are easy to carry.

I bet you get another one. :D

I too love fixed blades. My two Spyderco Temperance models go with me on all outdoor activities. But I can say with 100% full assurance that I've never had any of my Spyderco folders ever fail on me. I"ve never had any of their locking mechanisms not lock up solid.

And I've put many of them through some very severe punishing jobs too.

But there are 2 other knife companies I could mention but I won't. Because I also do also believe they have very reliable locking systems on their folders as well. But Spyderco blades do 95% of all my cutting chores and it's their locks I put my full faith in.

There has been a lot of research and many innovations with locking systems on folders in the past 15 years and I truly think it's a completely different world and a whole new era with folder locking systems than what it has been in the past.

I've heard a lot of disparaging remarks about liner locks for instance. But I've never had a Spyderco liner lock ever fail on me. My 2 favorites are the compression lock and the ball bearing lock but anything on a Spyderco folder can be trusted.
