As a new maker the more knives I make (ruin) the more I respect what you do.
So to all of you from the guy with just a few files and alot of determination to the ones who have stuck it out and really made it big. You have all earned my respect.

thanks bob. keep working on them, it took me to my 12th knife before i started getting the hang of it, but i didn't know about the bladeforums then.

Most if not all of us started where you are now. We all aspire to higher standards and greater things. Not all of us will reach the level of Tom and Jerry, but you never know where your going until you take the first step.
Expand your tool base as you expand your knowledge base doing it in reverse could get you into trouble and needless expence. However keep those original hand tools and your first few "knives". Then sometime in the future go back and make another knife with the old tools to see truely how far you have come. Do this and you will earn your own respect.
Thankyou

Tom & Jerry? As in Tom, the big dumb cat, and Jerry, the clever mouse who always gets the best of him?

I think I began to get a little better after about 10 years. That was my fault of course, because I was determined to teach myself. Then I asked a couple questions of some makers who really knew how to make knives and it all began to come together. Then it took another 10 years to get it right. I've been making them for about 19 years and am not there yet. It's why I love this business. You just never stop learning.

BTW, don't waste that 10 years like I did. Ask Ask Ask as many questions as you can think of.

You are right Jerry!
It is far easier to ask than to make the mistakes 10 times before you realize HEY there's got to be a better way.
Thanks to all of you and this forum I have learned in a few months what may have taken years to learn on my own
