What do you guys think is the best cold weather hat? I am heading to Eastern Oregon to hunt elk in November. The weather could be rain or snow. I am looking for something to be waterproof and warm. Any recommendations?

Have a look at Lowe Alpine stuff.

I've had a Triplepoint trail cap for years and love it. It makes me look like a bit of a goon but it is excellent for when I don't want the hood up. And the hood goes over it nicely as well. I bought one for mah woman a couple of years back too, only hers looks good on her. Don't trip on that though, I will always look like a bit of a dick if I put on any hat. A mate of mine wanted one but ended up with the Mountain GTX hat. Essentially the same hat but in Gore-Tex. That version didn't exist when I got mine but I don't feel I'm missing anything with mine. If I were to start a fresh now I'd be pitching the Lowe Explorer hat against it. It does look to be an improved version for winter use, it's just that the colour pallet for those is too small for my taste and I hate the contrasted piping. I like the one I have enough not to suffer those cosmetics after an upgrade. Top kit though.

In the winter in Oregon I've worn nothing but my old trusty wool watch cap. I have never found a better cold/wet weather head cover.

I have a fur lined oilskin canvas Kakadu trapper style hat that does an awesome job. Very durable, very warm. For the most part though, I get away with having long thick hair, or a wool knit Swix cross country skiing cap.

Not the sexiest of picks, but I've had one and lost it, now on order to get a replacement before the cold hits my baldy dome.

Watch cap or thick beanie with a hood for backup.
That Mountain Hardwear cap will save your ears, too.

I'm thinking about getting a Filson wool hat for winter time. They're pretty cool and they fit my huge noggin.:D

I use a combo of a thin fleece watch cap and a waterproof brimmed hat like the Seattle Sombrero. I'll lose the fleece, or at least roll it above my ears when I get into elk. The last thing I want when I'm hunting is a hood to interfere with my vision and/or hearing.

I have a stetson mello-felt hat that I wear in all seasons. It's crushable without losing it's shape, waterproof, and keeps my dome warm...what more do you want? A full brim keeps the rain off the head perfectly!

I use this as my Elk hunting hat: Link

Not actually waterproof, but it's dense wool and is very warm when wet (personally tested ). Yeah it has a bit of an Elmer Fudd look to it, but those ear flaps really work when the wind picks up.

If you need waterproof and don't need orange, they make a waxed version.

I use a wool boonie with ear/neck flaps that fold down from inside if you need em. I am a lil boonie biased tho, lol.

I have both of these. I use the western style for deer/Elk hunting and the cap for duck hunting. Both are waterproof and very warm. The western hat is made of rabbit fur and the cap is canvas. I love both and would not trade either for anything.
