As the title states, I have exactly $150 to spend on a decent pair of compact binoculars for hunting. I have my eye on these Steiners. Any other pairs I should be looking at? I like a lot of the bigger ones, but I feel I won't carry them if they are too big. Am I missing a lot by not going with large objective lens like these Nikons?

I've been researching Binoculars for a while now, so feel free to get technical...

I don't know a ton about optics but I got a pair of the Nikon monarch ATB for about $20 more than your limit. They cost close to $400 in the local outdoor shop here. They are super clear and much better than anything I have looked through before.

I got them from Amazon and if you don't mind running through some hoops can get them for pretty cheap. They were $250 with free shipping and a $50 mail in rebate. Then if you sign up for an Amazon credit card you get $30-$50 dollars off your first purchase depending on what special they are running.

I was going to cancel the card but I might keep it. You get points for purchases you make on it and it basically turns into money that you can use to buy stuff from Amazon.

I know a lot of people hate credit cards but if you are smart with them they have some advantages but I guess that is the subject of another thread. I do like how you can dispute a charge if you ever get ripped off. I have had to use that a few times and it has always saved me from a loss.

Another vote for Nikon Monarch ATB's. I have the 8.5x56, excellant clarity and low light performance. I've been thinking about getting a pair in 8x42 'cause they are about half the weight of what I have now.

I have Steiner and Nikons as well as Nikon Scopes on all my rifles. Get what feels best for you or for what you are using them for. I love my compact Steiners.

$150 will get you some okay glass and I second the motion on the Monarch ATBs. They're very good for the price.

But you'll see a marked improvement if you go up to about $300 in your budget. I have a pair of Leupold Pinnacles that are very nice and I paid around $300 if I recall correctly.
